Addressing a letter

Postby 8gatsu3 » January 5th, 2009 12:58 am

I want to post a parcel to Japan, I know you write 'sama' after an adult's name, but can anyone tell me what to write for a child? Kanji is fine.
It would be for a 9 year old boy, from my host family.
Thanks :)

You can use 様 (sama) for children.
If you write the addresss in kanji, 様 would be fine.
However, if you write it in alphabet (roma-ji), 様 would be strange.
Even if the address is written in roma-ji with the English format (St.No. is at the first), it should be delivered certainly.

I read a story once about a man who addressed his letters using different suffixes depending on the person, and only at a much later date did he finally hear that, "we knew it was from him because he always addressed his letters improperly." Personally, I've yet to see an exception to this, though admittedly the only postcard I've seen addressed to a young boy had two other names on it (one of which was the mother's). Still, it used 様, so you probably should as well.

Thanks for your help! I heard that you don't speak to a child using "san", so I thought it may be strange to use "sama" on a letter. Yeah, I won't write sama in romaji.

On a similar note, how would I address a letter to 3 people? (The whole family)
(surname) (given name) 様, (given name) 様, (given name) 様
or just one sama at the end?

Thanks!

When you write 2 or more ppl7s name, you put the first letter of their given name in a row in deferent column.

example;
山田 太郎 様
    花子 様
    一郎 様
