Postby ippaihea » February 13th, 2008 7:03 pm

Anybody want to join me on the playstation network and practice their japanese then add me to your friends. PS3 user name ippaihea. Add japanese to the invite.
I am currently addicted to burnout at the moment and my japanese studies are suffering as a consequence. 一石二鳥ね

I have been learning for about 10 mths but things seem to be going slowly.

I'll add you. My PSN id is 'bontakun'.

I dunno about practicing Japanese, since my Japanese sucks, but at least we can play some games, right? :)

But I only really play on weekends, since I'm usually studying Japanese on weekdays.

You guys should find a penpal for voice chats or some other way of speaking to natives. Even if you haven't tried speaking properly before, if you've studied a fair bit, you'll probably be amazed at the words and structures you can conjure up, and that you can actually hold a conversation for a couple of hours.

That's what happened to me, anyway. The areas I was weak in were the ones that can only be learned from speaking itself; overusing ね, ます and です slipping out (sounds pretty stupid in casual conversation), loads of really basic grammar errors that I knew I was making, but couldn't keep correcting, and obviously a lack of speed at constructing sentences on the fly.

So, if this was some sort of Bible tale, the moral would be to hurry and take the first step, so you can start working on the next ones. It is definitely a good idea to get in as much shadowing as you can beforehand, so that you're easy to understand, though.

You guys know you can make a Japanese account on PSN and download Japanese games, right? If you want to buy any, you need to find a way to purchase PSN cards, but there's free things like demos and that Mainichi Issho 'game'. (It's more of a daily news thing than a game, but whatever.)

I used EBay to get my first JP PSN card, but after that I stuck with that guy and buy them from his store.

There hasn't been a japan-only PSN game that I wanted get just yet, but when there is I'll be looking into getting a Japanese PSN card. I do import disc-based Japanese games often enough. Been playing through Aquanaut's Holiday lately. It's one of the few Japanese games that has trophies :D

Hey there,

I know this is kind of a long time after you posted this but I am always up for a chat in Japanese, or just to chat while we're gaming.

My screen name is "Matsuiichi". どうぞよろしく!

Also, it's worth noting that several PS3 games have the option to listen to the original Japanese audio - I'm just playing Valkyria Chronicles at the moment with Japanese audio switched on, for example.

Or you could just go ahead and order some Japanese games off PSN or the internet, like (most websites won't deliver PS3/PSP games to Europe because of bullying by Sony, but you can get them from sites like MovieTyme I think).
