japanese in college

Postby Hatake girl » September 17th, 2008 8:36 pm

Hi. i am a junior in highschool and have been thinking alot lately about what i would like to study in college. i really love the japanese language, but im not sure what i would be able to do with that as a major(i do NOT want to be a teacher). other than translations, i don't really see where a major in japanese would get me...
if anyone can find jobs that japanese would be used in, please post them here. thank you.

p.s.
i would really like to live in the U.S., so im not looking for jobs IN japan. thanks

Not sure how the US system works but don't you have a major and a minor subject (s)? How about majoring in something like business finance or something like that and minor in Japanese. It would be a definite plus point to get a job for a Japanese company with presence in the US - Toyota, Nomura etc etc

I understand you would rather learn while living in the USA, but I strongly suggest if you want to get a firm grip and have a deep understanding of the language you live in Japan while studying at least. It seems like the ones living and studying in Japan have a stronger base for their knowledge as they are able to use it in practical situations outside the classroom at all times.

Airports have jobs going for people who are able to translate, however they rarely hire people purely for translation, its just a bonus. Jobs in customs etc are common, but sometimes hard to find. Otherwise there are translation companies who hire and people pay them money to translate various things like important documents etc.

I am sure there are loads more, but they are a couple that spring to mind.

Good luck with your decision making!

Japanese language

It is great that you love Japanese language!
Majoring Japanese Language in college can leave you limited opportunities when you graduate and start looking for a job. Especially if you are not interested in becoming teacher, it will be more of the case. So I also suggest you major in something else such as international relations, business, economics, accounting etc.

As someone suggested, working at the airport will give you an opportunity to utilize your Japanese skills.
I hope this helps!
