Fingers !!!!

Something that is often covered in basic textbooks, but hasn't been covered in Jpod (to my knowledge)... body parts ! And especially names for all the fingers... Ok, it may seems trivial (and it probably is), and it should not be very high on the priority list, but as far as newbie topics go, I think this could be very useful...

There are other names in addition to these, but the primary ones are;

親指 (おやゆび oya-yubi) "Parent finger"
人差し指 (ひとさしゆび (hito-sashi-yubi) "Person-indicate Finger"
中指 (なかゆび (naka-yubi) "Middle Finger"
薬指 (くすりゆび (kusuri-yubi) "Medicine Finger"
小指 (こゆび koyubi) "Little Finger"

All of these are intuitive except for the "Medicine Finger," whose name originates in the Heian period when it was used-- as it is weaker and thus gentler-- to apply medicine.

I don't know that that's enough to constitute a full lesson, but I thought it was an interesting little cultural factoid.

Thank you very much for the finger names ! I do agree that maybe a whole lesson on the subject might be too much, but as you point out, there could be material for a bit of a JCC ...

These are medical and law terms;

拇指(ぼし boshi)
示指(しし shishi)
中指 (ちゅうし tyuusi)
環薬 (かんし kanshi)
小指 (しょうし syoushi)
