Learning through computer games?

Postby Ar_Yue » July 3rd, 2008 12:36 am

I was wondering, what level/how many characters should you able to read while you're playing on computer games?

At the moment, I have a Japanese version of Ace Attorney that my sister-in-law brought for me. I'm ok on the speaking and listening but I decided to brush up my reading. I have already jotted down characters that I'm not familiar with to improve my learning but roughly how much should I know?

I've only learnt about under 50-ish characters but still working at it. So... any idea?

Thank you. (^u^ )

Depends 100% on the game you're paying. I've seen games that are 100% kana, while others that use words for kanji that I seldom see. I heard that other games still (one of gameboy zelda games, don't recall which) have furigana support.

Basically, if your study of Japanese requires serious proficiency, don't settle for less than 2,500.

The zelda game is called - Zelda the phantom hourglass - playable with the Nintendo DS.
The kanji/furigana support is excellent if you want exercice and the game is very good too so I highly reccomend it ;-)

Older games (NES, some GameBoy ones IIRC, etc.) will be in all kana since they couldn't fit all the kanji into the cards. But I can't think of many actual examples. The GBA remakes of the first two Final Fantasy games (and maybe the PSP ones released later?) have the option to change the text from kanji to kana, I think.

One of the first games I played through in Japanese was Rockman & Forte, and I don't recall there being any kanji in it. My advice is if you're going to try something in Japanese for the first time, make sure it isn't an RPG.

Thank you soo much on the replies, I thought that it was a useless question to ask, but glad some people can shed light on the subject. Sorry I haven't been around to reply either, been busy researching on places. :) Heading to Japan next year :D Great to go back (TTuTT )

Well... I'm slow progressing in my game, Ace Attorney, but I think I need a simple game to play on. (TT__TT )

Thanks newobsorder for that link. I think I might grab myself a copy.

On the games that are basic Japanese... The last game I played that was mostly kana with little kanji was the early Pokemon games. It's like ages ago and don't know whether everyone plays on them now. But most of the young/kiddies computer games are like basic.
