Help with translation

In a lesson there was this line...

これはどこの車ですか。

Doesn't どこ mean where? And when you add the particle のit basically mean where's...doesn't it? Because the in translation it says this sentence means "what kind of car is this" but I don't understand how どこのcan mean "what kind"...shouldn't the word どんなbe there instead of どこの?

In this case, I think it's 'where' as in 'of where, where is it from' (is it a German car, Japanese car, American car, etc.).

For instance, if the car is Japanese, you would answer:

"Sore wa Nihon no kuruma desu."
