Am I understanding this right?

甘いものは好きなほうです。

That means "I like sweet things", right? I'm used to seeing "~のほうが~”, but I've never seen it like that before. Is it the same?

I think ”好きなほう” means a favourite/preferred choice.

I mean, literally I guess it means "liked way"...Not 100% sure though.

You're both correct. It's basically just another way of saying 甘いもののほうは好きです、meaning "I prefer sweet things."
