Installing Japanese language without the CD? (Windows XP Pro

Postby WalterWills » April 4th, 2008 8:30 pm

Hi,

I recently bought a laptop, second-hand.

It uses XP Professional (licensed) but I wasn't given any CD's with it. I want to install East Asian language support but it tells me I need to have a certain CD.

Is there any way I can download this from the internet or do I need the CD? Can I use any Windows XP Pro CD or just the one registered with my laptop?

Perhaps I need to contact the guy who sold me the laptop.

Have you tried bringing up Windows Update, and checking if the language packs appear under the optional installs?

Ok, so I did a bit of hunting around and I found a piece of software from Microsoft called global IME 5.02 you should be able to use it to get Japanese without the CD.

It states it is for Office XP but I imagine it will work with an office or open office version as it is just an IME.

Go to http://office.microsoft.com/en-gb/help/HA010347361033.aspx

Download the Japanese support then you should be able to select Japanese from the language bar without the CD. I have not tried this myself but see how it goes.

Actually, the ones that say for Office will only install if they detect MS Office of the version listed installed. Now, if you have another computer with XP (any version), or can get your hands on one (borrow from a friend??) that will work. Also, look for the following directories on your hard drive. If one of them is full of .cab files, try pointing windows to it when it asks for your windows cd.

c:\i386
c:\windows\options\cabs

You can probably get all the files you you need from the web. Proceed the installation normally and when it tells you that file "xxxxx.xxx" was not found, google for it. I've found most at the site http://dlldump.com

But perhaps this may be very time consuming, I have no idea how many files you will need to copy. And I'm not really sure that you will be able to find all the files necessary.

PS you can probably get a new cd from the laptop manufacturer, just say you lost it.

Okay, I searched really long and hard for that link, but:
http://www.bhashaindia.com/Developers/IndianLang/IndicScript/oslevel.htm?lang=en
As you will note, this is for Hindi. Just take a look at the third step and add Japanese instead of Hindi, at least that's what I did and it worked really well.

This one tells the same:
http://www.greggman.com/japan/xp-ime/xp-ime.htm
Just with more pictures and I can't really tell you where "step 3" starts here, all I can tell you is that you need to get to the "add" window.
I am rather sure you'll manage. ^^

And it works without CD. ^^

If you can't get it working, there is the way to get a demo version of this:
http://www.njstar.com/
(The programm and the input is rather good but just to expensive for my taste)

And I am not really sure what Windows Mobile is, but maybe you can get this one running:
http://www.ookii.org/software/japaneseinput/
it should be helpful for now too...

And, if there are problems installing the IME/ if the site just doesn't make any sense: there are tons of other sites doing the same. Just google it up and get one that apeals more to you.
If there are problems it's likely that there are helpful sites too...

Thanks for the help everyone..

I've done it now :D

What I did was simply copy the Windows/i386/ folder from my main PC onto my laptop...why I didn't do that in the first place, I don't know. It was too obvious!
