Kanjis for my name?

Konnichiwa, Mina-san!!

My name is Moisés"モイセス" (Moses "モーセ" in English). As surely you know this is a Egyptian name. Well, I think writting my name in katakana it's ok, but I want it in kanji, that will be super OK, and I found it in a japanese Bible. But... it's not in Kanji.

How can I write it with Kanjis?
Can I use onyomi / kunyomi combinations or only one type of pronuntiation?
Can I use any Kanji?
It's ok if I use kanjis that japanese use for their names?
Japanese people choose the name by the mean?

The problem I think I could find is that the combination ot the kanjis could create a different meaning of what I really want my name means, or what my name actually means (saved from the waters), and I don't want it ends meaning something like "kick my ass". Of course watching the kanjis we want a speciall mean.

Any piece of advice?

Gaijin don't use Kanji for their name. Unless, they want to look strange. (Remember the musician who legally changed his name to an unpronounceable symbol? That type of strange.) 'Tis best to simply transliterate and stick with kana. If you want to reverse the order, that may be acceptable. (surname given name instead of given name surname)

I didn't understand you (kc8ufv-san); I will wait a better answer, then if in this forum there isn't a respectable answer I will give up. Because I still think it's possible. And If the answer comes from one member of JapanesePod, then I will be more sure it's completly impossible the idea . Because I didn't find other place where teachs the japanese like here. I've heard before of foreigners getting Kanji names from the schoolkids they teach.

They do it by taking your Katakana name and changing the syllables into whatever Kanji is pronounced in that way.


What's "Moses" in Katakana?

モーゼズ？

「網是図」　is one example.

網 = Mou

是 = Ze

図 = Zu


I don't know what 「網是図」 might mean though. Could be something embarrassing!

So you might want to try other Kanji that are pronounced in that way.
For example:

MOU (I suppose "Mou" would be the Hiragana equivalent of モー)

盲
蒙
耗

The whole point of katakana is to represent foreign words, that's why your name should be written using it. As far as I'm aware, katakana is considered pretty cool anyway, so unless you have kanji on your birth certificate, you're going to look like a geek if you write your name using them. I don't understand people who do this.

What kc8ufv was saying is basically that if you use kanji in this way, you're going to look something like the following:

ha ha ha ha ha ha... almost I break in two for the laugh when I saw that picture... uf! well... I'm begining to think that if it's not difficult it could be very strange... but,.. I still have some doubts about this subject... obviously I'm NOT japanese (or from an asian culture) and the Idea to write it in Kanji, and the use I want to give it, it is strictly PERSONAL, of course I don't want a tattoo (I hate them) and I'm not going to be around there puting my name for everywhere the idea is very simple: to write my name in kanji, BUT if for many people this is weird, please let me know what you think about... and Arigatou...

And I am someone I know the 1% of what you find in internet probably is true... And I found these pictures and in the site where I found them they said this is my name but I'm not sure. Indeed. Don't a lot of Japanese celebrities/pop stars etc. use katakana for their names? I'm sure Miki Furukawa does, for example.

There are two ways - as walter suggests but you also want to make sure the kanji you pick there means something when it is together. My father in law did this for my son when he was born - even though he has a western name (also biblical) we made sure that it had the right letter combinations for kana. I can't remember it but will dig it out and post it and see who can guess his name!

The second way is to use the meaning of the name. For example my name is Jonathan which has a bible meaning of something like "gift from god" and you select a kanji to reflect that meaning.

All said and done - most people don't bother!

one thing you have to be careful of is that there are some kanji used for names, and other kanji that usually aren't, asking a japanese person is the best way to get a set that actually look like a name. 　

you can use 常用漢字 (jouyou kanji)
and 人名用漢字 (jinmeiyou kanji) for names
but you can't use 非常用漢字 (hijouyou kanji) (prohibited by japanese law).

常用漢字 is standard kanji, so you can use those.

Well, now I'm very happy and thankful for the answers, I see not all want their name in kanji, and there's someways to do it anyway, and as Markystar-san said:

asking a japanese person is the best way to get a set that actually look like a name.

モーセ can be divided into モー and セ.
However モー is katakana and it doesn't have kanji, もう in hiraga is the same pronunciation of モー in katakana.

毛：coat, fur, hair
孟：keen, strong, extreme （ Mencius is 孟子 in kanji, who is a famous cahinese philosopher. ）
猛：keen, strong, extreme （ 猛きん類 = birds of prey, 猛 is takeshi in kun-read which is used for male name. ）
蒙：蒙(もうむ)る[koumuru] = put on one's head, inccur

せ
背：one's back
瀬：ford, stream, chance
世：world
施：施(ほどこ)し[hodokoshi]=charity, dispensation

Please chose each of them and combine them.
