Help with translation please...

Postby slavor » May 8th, 2008 4:56 pm

I need help with these translations. I feel my own translations are off because they have no coherence. I pretty much need to understand these questions because they are belong to a folktale. Thanks for your help guys.

2. Futari wa donna seikatsu o shite imasu ka? - What kind of life do the two live?
3. Nangatsu goro no hanashi deshiyou ka?
4. Ojiisan wa nani o urinii kimashita ka?
5. Dare mo katsutekurenai toki, ojiisan wa donna kimochi chideshita ka?
6. Yuki no naka de ojiisan wa nani o mitsukemashita ka?
7. Ojiisan wa jibun no kasa o doushimashita ka?
8. Obaasan wa ojiisan no hanashi o kiite nanto iimashita ka?
9. Dare ga yoru o sokuojiisan o tazunete kimashita ka?
10. Oshiyoukatsu no asafutari wa nani o shimashitaka, donna kimochi chideshita ka?
11. Ojizousan wa naze ojiisan no ie ni kimashita ka?
12. Kono mukashi banashi o yonde anata wa dou omoi mashita ka?

Are these copied from text or transcribed? Some of them don't quite seem to make sense...

In any case, this folktale was in one of the jpod101 lessons - you might want to give it a listen! I can't remember which one exactly, but it was a beginner lesson I think, with Sakura-san narrating iirc.

Hey thanks for replying, yea they were transcribed for a version of that folktale. Also literally, found out about the JP101 version right when I responded, it definitely will help a lot, but the prob is I still need to make sense of these questions

Why are you still using romaji at this level? Anyway, there were a lot of errors, but I'm pretty sure these are right:

3. Around what month would you say the story was set?
4. What did the old man come to sell?
5. When nobody bought anything, what did the old man do? (assuming katsute should be katte)
6. What did the old man find among the snow?
7. What happened to the old man's bamboo hat?
8. Having heard the old man's account of the events, what did the old woman say?
9. Who came to visit the old man at night?
10. What did the two do on the first morning of the New Year? How did they feel?
11. Why did the o-jizou-san come to the old man's house?
12. Having read this story, what did you think of it?

No problem. I thought you might be one of those pro-romaji nuts for a second

By the way, the second part of #5 should actually be 'how did the old man feel?'. That 'katsute' threw me off so much that I forgot about the rest of the sentence
