漢字独 -Like sudoku? use it for kanji learning.

Postby mikuji » January 31st, 2008 2:29 pm

I quite like puzzles and recently I have hit on a way to use this passion to make up drills for kanji shape recognition.

This is how it works:
1. get a sudoku puzzle to solve.
2. make a grid and note the numbers given in the appropriate boxes in small print in a corner.
3. select 9 kanji I want to become proficient at remembering, or rather at recognising.
4. write the legend with these kanji and numbers under your grid.
5. transfer the kanji corresponding to the number in the appropriate box in the grid.
6. now play the sudoku as normal but with kanji instead of numbers.

et voila- Enjoy!

Advantages:
a. you get a lot of practice in fast recognition of the kanji as a whole; useful if you confuse particular ones with each other
b. you can learn whilst doing something else which is fun よく学びよく遊べ as they say..
c. by concentrating on the puzzle you expose your subconscious to the shapes and engage your brain in subliminal learning.
d. you have to write the kanji down which helps with kinestetic learning.
e. a ready made square box is there for you to help you write the kanji neatly.
Disadvantages:
a. difficult to learn shape, meaning and readings at same time.

I've never cared that much for the puzzles myself, however this idea is awesome enough to make me want to try, especially since I'm tackling literacy in Mandarin.

Thanks for the suggestion, mikuji!

Wow, that is really thinking outside the box...

...get it? sorry, I couldn't resist. That's pretty hard core though. Very interesting!

I think it's a great idea as well.
I used to use kanji numerals, but never thought of using other kanji as well.

However after reading your post, I like using computers so I went searching for a more automated way to achieve it.

I found this site Kanji Sudoku. Garish but interesting. Not an online game but there are many grids you can print out that use kanji based on their shape or topic. The puzzles quite usefully have the target kanji with their readings printed below them.

Wow, Mikuji. That's an excellent, and brilliant idea. Sudoku was always interesting, but with Kanji, it's even better.

Now, your next task is to come up with "Kanji Kakuro."
*tap tap* Is this thing on?

You could use the stroke counts I guess. (and go slowly crazy!)

すうどくが すきですから, これを こころみます.

„I’ll try it“ は日本語で何ですか. „これを こころみます“ ですか.
