receiving verbs help

Postby jkid » April 12th, 2008 11:16 am

I'm still having a hard time understanding the differences between あげます, もらいますand くれます. If anyone has a particularly good way to remember when to use which that'd be really handy.

Also, if anyone knows of an online quiz to test how well I understand the different verbs that'd be really helpful as well. :)

あげます goes from the subject to the indirect object, i.e. from you/somebody you're taking the viewpoint of to the receiver. Unlike the English verb 'to give', it only works one way, so that makes it a bit easier to understand.

もらいます and くれます, on the other hand, are a little more tricky. Although they can be translated the same way sometimes, they actually work in opposite directions in Japanese. I don't have a lot of time right now, but I gave an explanation in this thread, so try checking that out and if there's anything in particular you don't understand I'll try giving you a more detailed explanation later (if somebody else doesn't).

jkidさん、that's a JLPT3 grammar point, so actually in the Learning Center if you use the JLPT 3 tests, you should be quizzed on those particular points. also pay attention to beginner season 2 and season 3 and anything higher. you'll come across it a lot since they are so common. hope this helps!!

Marky - It's times like these I wish I had a premium subscription :)

Thanks for the info anyway - I'll pay attention to the lesson categories you suggested.

Javizy - Your examples sentences in the thread you linked were helpful I just keep thinking back to them.

hmmm I turned off my subscription, money has been killing me lately, and I rarely used the subscription parts...mostly just listen to lower int and upper int lesson audio.

If you have a premium subscription, it's much cheaper than taking a Japanese class :D :D :D

In my town there are no schools really, but you can find some private teachers in the newspaper. But for a year of lessons, it's better and MUCH cheaper here. 8) 8) 8)

So when I pay, I have the comfort of knowing I helped guarantee the podcast will be here next year too. :ooen: :ooen: :ooen:
