a question about about "やる"

Postby PinkStatic » March 8th, 2008 10:45 am

Hello all! Just signed up for this site (it's incredible btw. I love how it makes learning japanese so welcoming and friendly. i guess its the people  ) after finally deciding to take the dive into learning japanese (it does come in handy- i go to hokkaido to snowboard a LOT).

Anyway, i've got a question about beginner lesson #94- the order of action (yes im still a noob). The first line goes-

皆さん、今日は一緒に紙飛行機作りをやりましょう

My question is: what IS this "やりましょう" at the back? im guessing it comes from the verb "やる". But the dictionary in the learning center returns this as "to give". So i'm a little stuck with translation here.

Would really appreciate it if someone could help me out. And many thanks in advance!

やる is actually a slightly more informal version of する, so やりましょう means 'let's do'. やる can also be used like あげる to inferiors or with friends to mean 'to give'. The difference is in context, and like you said, 'to give' wouldn't make sense in this case, so you can easily be sure that it means 'to do'.

何やってるんだ?
What are you doing?
私はさくらにりんごをやった。
I gave an apple to Sakura.
犬をあらってやるよ。
I'll wash your dog for you.

There are a few other uses, but I wouldn't worry about them for now.
