translation help (kudasai!)

Postby WalterWills » March 7th, 2008 7:32 pm

Stuck on the following sentences...Although I get the jist of everything from translating kanji, I just want to be sure..

1.どうせは、皮肉に聞こえるのであまり使いません。怒ってる時にはNice!!)

Something about my incorrect use of the word "どうせ" I think.

2. あと、質問!!私はあなたに書く時は、敬語がいいですか?今みたいに書いてると、段々、敬語がなくなる気がします
今は、少しの敬語と、友達の会話のような親しい言葉が、混ざってます。

About using honorific expressions?

My Japanese is terrible!

Thanks

since "douse" can sound sarcastic it isn't used very much. It's nice!!! for when [you're] angry

Next, QUESTION!! Is it OK to use polite language when I write you? Like how I'm writing now, it seems like it's getting less and less.

Maybe I'm just too tired, but I give up on trying to make a non-awkward sounding translation for the next line. The meaning is about how intimate, friendly language has been getting all mixed up with the small amount of Keigo.

I'm sure Javizy or someone will have more to say about the grammar on this later, but as for me I've got to sleep. Hope this helps give you a handle on what's being said.

Well actually Fedgrub, as long as you know some good online Kanji dictionaries, then you'll be thankful for Kanji because you can tell what words are nouns, adjectives, verbs etc from the hiragana (or lack of hiragana) and you can simply translate any kanji you don't know (in my case, 99% of it).

Thanks Psy. I do think that I get the meaning of most Japanese, I'm just worried I might miss things.

Everyone does at some point so don't worry about it. The more you learn, use and refine the better you'll get. If you'll point out anything that's murky to you I will be glad to explain in detail.
