で revisited ~で暮らす in JBP

Postby tizzlebling » February 25th, 2008 6:07 pm

Hello,

I thought I understood the usage of particles で and に until I found the following example in Japanese for Busy People II Revised (page 210):

田舎で暮らすこと

Why is で used here? Some grammar books explicitly list 暮らす as a verb connected with に. Is it a mistake or is there a deeper meaning behind it?

Where did you read that? My dictionary lists 暮らす with an example using で, and a book about particles I have says that only the following verbs take に instead of で to mark the location of an action: 座る、勤める、住む、積もる、and 置く.

Although... if you Google it, there are examples of both, so maybe it's one of those things that even Japanese people get wrong (possibly because of 住む being close in meaning), or maybe both are acceptable. Naomi usually knows things like this, so you could try asking in the lesson comments, otherwise hopefully somebody reading this thread can help.

I've heard で with 暮らす most of the time.

Kodansha's "A Dictionary of Japanese Particles" by Sue A. Kawashima, page 119

In addition to those, the book I have mentioned lists also: 根ざす、落ち着く、浮かぶ、横たわる、泊まる and 暮らす.

There is a difference, but I will check for accuracy before I post anything.

You could also post it at http://www.guidetojapanese.org/forum/viewforum.php?id=2
