Let's learn Japanese together by watching Pokémon

Postby watermen » February 22nd, 2008 3:39 am

There are so many online video clips of this anime translated into various language (which I don't understand most of the time). Since this show is targeted for Japanese kids, I thought it will be a good idea to learn Japanese from this anime.

I will start with the lastest series of this anime, Pokemon DP opening song.

君のそばで
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jf4Mht0T ... re=related

I will learn by translating 1 or 2 lines or this song or any new clip everyday. Please correct me if there is something wrong in my translation.

君のそばで = At your sides.

ピンクに輝く ==> In the glory pink color
自慢のポケッチ ==> Pride of my pocket

迷った時には ==> When I get lost.
コイントスをして ==> toss the coin

いつでもまっすぐ ==> Always keep straight
前をみつめてる ==> Look forward

That is all for me today, will continue tomorrow. Correct me if there is something wrong. Thanks.

Frankly I'm not that big on pokemon, but for learning purposes this is as good an idea as any.

The only thing that's outright wrong there is 「ピンクに輝く」. 輝く means "to shine" so the whole thing means "to shine pink." If I were to criticize your translation otherwise I would say to interpret the sections as a whole rather than to go line-by-line. For example 「いつでもまっすぐ 前を見つめてる」 "always looking straight ahead." I took a moment to search for the rest of the lyrics:

ピンクに輝く 自慢のポケッチ
迷った時には コイントスをして
いつでもまっすぐ 前を見つめてる
強くなれる 君のそばで 力になれる

「ガンバレ」っていうより
「ダイジョウブ」って伝えたい
信じる勇気あれば GO GO GO!!

君となら Yeah!!
一緒に Step!!
大きく Jump!!
飛び越えてゆけるだろう
どんな山も どんな谷も こわくないさ

みんなで Yeah!!
一緒に Step!!
明日へ Jump!!
いますぐ瞬間を感じて
走り出そう 風に乗って
もっと 強く!!

Have fun. :D

I am a major Pokemon fan and 16 years old!!! I will never outgrow Pokemon!! Anyway, just listen to Japanese in general will get people used to how things are supposed to sound. I always like to listen for words that I recognize.
