Very funny Japanese Mac vs PC ad : Practice listening skill

Postby watermen » February 13th, 2008 7:29 pm

This ad is funny, I would also like to use it to practice my Japanese listening skill. I tried my best to type the conversation out, but some of them don't make sense to me and there are a few words I couldn't catch it. May someone kindly correct me and fill the blank?

Umm... yeah, we already covered that quite thoroughly over in this thread. The full transcript is as follows:

PC:はじめましてパソコンです。
Mac:はじめましてマックです。
PC:え? あなたもパソコンですよね。
Mac:でもみんなマックって呼ぶんだよね。
PC:なにかあなただけ特別じゃないですか? 友達みたいで・・・
Mac:みんな家で僕をプライベートに使うから、親しみやすいのかな・・・
PC:なろほど・・・
PC:私はビジネスライクな関係ばかりですから・・・ 何か特別な呼び名が欲しいです。
Mac:仕事での付き合いがメインなら・・・ワークっていうのはどうかな?
PC:マックとワーク・・・マック!

As you might have already guessed, those subtitles have no real connection to what's actually being spoken.

I would like to try translating the sentence to gauge my understanding, please correct me.

PC:はじめましてパソコンです。
Nice to meet you, I am PC.

Mac:はじめましてマックです。
Nice to meet you, I am Mac.

PC:え? あなたもパソコンですよね。
eh? You are PC too?

Mac:でもみんなマックって呼ぶんだよね。
But everyone called me a Mac.

PC:なにかあなただけ特別じゃないですか? 友達みたいで・・・
You don't have anything special? My friend see??? (Not sure what this sentence is trying to get at.)

Mac:みんな家で僕をプライベートに使うから、親しみやすいのかな・・・
Everyone use me privately at home...(I don't understand the next sentence)

PC:なろほど・・・
I see...

PC:私はビジネスライクな関係ばかりですから・・・ 何か特別な呼び名が欲しいです。
I am businesslike, ...( I don't know how to translate the next sentence)

Mac:仕事での付き合いがメインなら・・・ワークっていうのはどうかな?
If I am mainly associated with works. How about working?

PC:マックとワーク・・・マック!
Mac and Work....Mac!

PC:はじめましてパソコンです。
howzit, I'm PC

Mac:はじめましてマックです。
yo, I'm Mac

PC:え? あなたもパソコンですよね。
Really? But your a PC too huh

Mac:でもみんなマックって呼ぶんだよね。
Ya, but everyone calls me Mac

PC:なにかあなただけ特別じゃないですか? 友達みたいで・・・
You got anything special bout you? You look friendly...

Mac:みんな家で僕をプライベートに使うから、親しみやすいのかな・・・
Since everyone in the home uses me for personal use, maybe I'm just easy to get to know (hard to think of a good english translation here)

PC:なろほど・・・
Well no s**t...

PC:私はビジネスライクな関係ばかりですから・・・ 何か特別な呼び名が欲しいです。
Well, I'm mostly associated with business... but is there anything special name you want to be called by??

Mac:仕事での付き合いがメインなら・・・ワークっていうのはどうかな?
Well, since business is my main usage.... what about being called Work?

PC:マックとワーク・・・マック!
Mac and Work....Mac!

(In the end he mighta tried mixing mac and work but came out with mac, something to that extent to make the two names one. Good marketing, hit the work market more).

Hrm...

I know you're bein' brief but these are both polite sentences.

PC:なにかあなただけ特別じゃないですか? 友達みたいで・・・
You got anything special bout you? You look friendly...

I would say instead of "you look friendly" that's more towards "[[why is it] people are treating you] like a friend..."

PC: . . . 何か特別な呼び名が欲しいです。
. . . but is there anything special name you want to be called by??

This is not a question. "... I want a special name too!" Note that 何か doesn't make it in the translation because it would sound weird.

Mac:仕事での付き合いがメインなら・・・ワークっていうのはどうかな?
Well, since business is my main usage.... what about being called Work?

I think because of the last sentence you're confusing the omitted subject here: "Well, seeing as you're mainly associated with work... how's 'Work' sound?" Mac is suggesting this name to PC.

PC:マックとワーク・・・マック!
Mac and Work....Mac!

Just watch how PC gestures.

That's my take. Corrections always welcome.

I still don't quite understand the meaning of this sentence.

なにか something あなた you だけ only

特別じゃないですか ==> I know it means special. By why put じゃないですか there?

I really don't get the meaning of the whole sentence.

なにかあなただけ特別じゃないですか? 友達みたいで・・・

なにか is common for the word something. Its used the same as we use it in english imo.

あなただけ is correct. Only you. Limited to you.

特別じゃないですか? Is a a question in the negative form, meaing isnt there something special about you. The Jyanai part say with a rising intonation. This is a question that is fishing for information, try to make your own sentance and use it.

なにかあなただけ持ってる飲み物じゃないですか?
isnt there something special, some drink or something that only you have?

Well, I wouldnt really ask that question, cant be a scavenger, its just not good manners, but thats just to show a possible sentence structure.

Thanks. I think I understand now.
