This is easy. What about year like 1987?

Let's see, that should be

1000 9 100 8 10 7 年
せん きゅ ひゃく はち じゅう なな ねん

or should it be しち? I always forget when to use which.

Or, there's 昭和62年

昭 和 6 10 2 年
しょう わ ろく じゅう に ねん

Edit: fix typos

Is there a shorter way to pronounce? Does Japanese really pronounce in such a long way? Was there any lesson in Jpod 101 teaching us how to pronounce? I don't think I come across one. May be Jpod101 can make one lesson to teach us how to pronounce.

Check out Awakenings III. A different date format is covered there. You can determine my age from the comments.

I want to know how to pronounce the Gregorian calendar way, not the Japanese Emperor way...if there is no such lesson, may be we can suggest Jpod101 to make one, since learning how to pronounce the year is pretty important.

I agree that it's long-winded, but it's how they say dates on the news and just about everything else I've heard. There must be at least some sort of casual form similar to '07, but I've no idea what it is. I really wish they'd pick up on the convention of breaking the year down into smaller units

By the way, it is なな年, and not しち年, to clarify what kc said.

True, there is no shorthand and I have confirmed this with two japanese friends.

If you really think about it we don't use short hand (at least right now) most of the time.
Shorthand probably won't comeback into common use until another century or so.

It's certainly a good decade for asking the date in Japanese, にせんはちねん is only slightly longer than two-thousand-eight, but that's no help when we need to reference other years: what would (the artist formerly known as) Prince have done if he were Japanese?

Tonight I wanna party like it's せんきゅうひゃくきゅうじゅうきゅうねん!
