日本に来た時はおみやげにいかが?

Postby 7daytrial » January 18th, 2008 3:34 am

Translation help:

残念ながらアメリカにはないのです
日本に来た時はおみやげにいかが?

Is this the correct translation:

I'm afraid they don't have this in America.
When you come to Japan how about this as a souvenir? (to take back home)

これは正しいですか?

No, that usage of "when" doesn't apply in japanese. Think of いつ as "when?" (notice the question mark).

I don't recommend translating things into English, changing the English around, and then translating back to Japanese;

日本に来た時は -> The time you come to Japan -> When you come to Japan -> いつあなた日本に来る

The above isn't correct!

Your translation seems ok, it's a little hard without context though.

I was talking to someone in Japan about a Japanese arcade game and how it looked pretty cool and the reply was:

残念ながらアメリカにはないのです
日本に来た時はおみやげにいかが?

Each time you play the game you supposedly get a character/monster card and can use that to play the game.

The arcade game is called: ドラゴンクエスト モンスターバトルロード

It's the first time I've ever heard of it. Here's a trailer for the arcade game.

It's made by SQUARE-ENIX...it's gotta be good.

日本に来た時はおみやげにいかが?

I'm glad I'm not the only one who didn't "get" the question. Could you please try to elaborate more on what it is you're wanting to say?

ah, sorry about that.

Well, I wanted to ask whether or not my translation was correct.

残念ながらアメリカにはないのです
日本に来た時はおみやげにいかが?

translates to:

I'm afraid they don't have this in America.
When you come to Japan how about this as a souvenir? (to take back home)

I added a second question after this (which probably caused the confusion) but I'll edit that out.

So the question is did I translate this correctly?

Synopsis:

I was talking to someone in Japan about a Japanese arcade game.

Wow, your friend there sure does netspeek! Given that context, I'd say your translation is right on the money. Feel free to throw in any other questions you have. 8)
