Does anyone of you revise old lessons?

Postby watermen » January 3rd, 2008 2:39 pm

Yesterday, I started revising some of the old lessons, I started from the first lesson, 1st beginner and survival lesson. I find it very fun to listen to it again, most importantly, I feel that it strengthen my Japanese. 懐かしいね。。。

oh yea... i do revise the old lessons very often... coz i lack a japanese-speaking partner so i have to rely on repetitions. it's not the best way to learn japanese but until i find a japanese speaking partner, this would be the best for me. =D

i just visited my gf's parents' home again and i reviewed the culture class (part1 & 2) about visiting somebody's house. when i visit my friends i'm all casual, but the polite phrases in those lessons really went far in showing my respect for their hospitality. i recommend reviewing that and any lessons.

btw - if you click the grammar tags in the lesson post you can find other lessons that use the same grammar point. the grammar bank also has a separate set of grammar tags that reference lessons. (unfortunately the old lessons aren't as well tagged as the recent ones, but i've been trying to get to those when i remember old ones that relate to new ones and i go back and re-tag them when i have free time!)

I relisten to them quite often.

Actually, that's not quite true: I never relisten to the lessons themselves, but I do frequently relisten to the Japanese dialogs. In fact, I have them all on my mp3 player, which I leave on random play. There are about the same number of Japanese mp3s as songs, so on average I get to listen to 1 song, 1 Japanese dialog, 1 song, etc. Depending on how long in a day I listen to my mp3 player, sometimes I can listen to really quite a lot of old lessons in a day.

The exception to this is the Intermediate lessons. As a majority of the lessons is in Japanese, I find it useful to go back and listen to entire lessons, including the explanations, as it is all good practice.

The intermediates are not easy...this is why I need to do revision. I realized that I forgot quite a lot of stuff.

Most importantly, listening to the beginner lessons again is very refreshing, you may pick up something that you don't when you listen to it for the first time.

I relisten to them a lot in the car. I find they sink in better if I am listening without realising.

Hi there, folks. I'm confident that I already have a decent handle of at least 90% of the language content of all of the lessons available on the site. This isn't to say, however, that my Japanese is excellent or that I've invested nearly enough time in listening that a dedicated student should. That being the case, I have elected to go "back to basics" and (seeing as I haven't before listened to a majority of the beginner lessons) and listen through all of them, one by one, day by day, from there moving up to the lower and intermediate level material. Since I don't listen to Japanese every day (though I do read it), I feel it's long overdue to have such a goal. I'm also thinking of setting up a blog about it.

So yeah, you could safely say that I'm reviewing old lessons. This'll take awhile-- wish me luck! :D

I review the PDF's, then listen to the entire lesson, and then read the PDF again if I couldn't make out any lines in the dialogue. I only do this with the two higher-level lessons, because Beginner S2 ones are rarely worth printing, but they're fun to listen to. It's much easier to remember stuff by reading it, plus you get to review kanji and generally improve your reading skills.

I keep any lessons that I can't understand fully in my iPod, and go over them a few days after. I find it helps me if I can take time away from the material for a couple of days before going back to it. Sometimes I find I understand it immediately after time away from it.

Then again, sometimes I still don't get it, then it's another break and another few repetitions of the lesson...

I'm currently studying the old lessons in tandem with the new ones, date by date...I found out that way that there were tons of material in those lessons that I had forgotten all about (vocab in the interection between the hosts, mostly)

And besides, it's funny....

I've gone back 2 days ago and listening to the old ones, up to lesson 63, although I do confess I have skipped a few (the first 30  )
