Postby lazysunday » January 1st, 2008 9:31 pm

Am I correct in this assessment:

私の猫は小さなです。
My cat is tiny.

その猫は小さなです。
That cat is tiny.

その猫も黒いです。
That cat is black too.

それは小さな猫います。
There is a tiny cat.

小さな猫がいる。
There is a tiny cat.

大きな猫もいる。
There is a big cat as well.

You're spot-on except for two:

その猫は小さなです。

To avoid getting grammatical, you only use な with 小さ when it connects to another word: You can say 小さな猫です but not 小さなです, きれいです but not きれいなです. Also, 小さい and 大きい are special exceptions in that, when used as the predicate (the "tail" of the sentence), the 'な' versions aren't correct. You must use 小さい/大きい.

Again, everything else is right. Keep up the good work!

OK for the sake of having a version for reference

私の猫は小さです。
My cat is tiny.

その猫は小さです。
That cat is tiny.

その猫も黒いです。
That cat is black too.

それは小さな猫います。
There is a tiny cat.

小さな猫がいる。
There is a tiny cat.

大きな猫もいる。
There is a big cat as well.

Hmm, I guess I wasn't clear enough. In the predicate, aka the part that comes after は or が, you are required to use 小さい/大きい if you aren't connecting them another noun. 大きな猫です "it's a big cat" and 小さな問題です "it's a small problem" are both correct, but in order to say it's big/small, you must say 小さいです because 小さです is incorrect. This is a special exception with these two words, but to sound correct you must observe it. So again, the correct versions of the first two are:

私の猫は小さです。
My cat is tiny.

その猫は小さです。
That cat is tiny.

以上で~す!

ok now it makes sense that they are listed 2 ways in the kanji drill book

私の猫は小さいです。
My cat is tiny.

その猫は小さいです。
That cat is tiny.

その猫も黒いです。
That cat is black too.

それは小さな猫います。
There is a tiny cat.

小さな猫がいる。
There is a tiny cat.

大きな猫もいる。
There is a big cat as well.
