Let's play modifying a sentence game

Postby watermen » November 28th, 2007 2:19 am

This is a game I saw on Mango Languages, it is a game where you substitute part of the sentence to make it into a new sentence.

The purpose of this game is to improve reading and understanding of Japanese grammar.

Here are the rules: (Added on 11/28/2007 2:33PM)
1. You are only allowed to modify one small part of the sentence in one round. You cannot modify the whole sentence.
2. You are allowed to change the meaning of the whole sentence by modify part of it.
3. If you change it into a grammatically wrong sentence, you lose the game, someone has to correct it first before the game can proceed.
4. You are only allowed to add/delete 1 word in a round, it can a noun with particles or copula and adverb or adjective. Alternatively you can use 1 noun + 1 particle + 1 adverb or adjective if you deem appropriate.
5. You are allowed to break the sentence into 2 or more, but you must abide to the above mentioned rules.
6. You are allowed to delete 1 part of the sentence at a time if you can make the sentence better.

I have not seen this game being played at an extensive level, therefore, I cannot predict the outcome of this game, I will moderate this game together with everyone, new rules may be added to improve the game as it progress.

Example:
原文:
Japanesepod101は最高です。

A player can change the sentence to: Japanesepod101は悪いです

Please use red color to highlight the part that you modify.

The next player can then change it to: Japanesepod101は悪くないです

The changes continue, depend on how creative the player is.

The sentence will be:
原文:
Japanesepod101は最高です。

On the rules side of things, I would suggest that you are not allowed to change the sentence in a way that reverses or erases the immediately previous change.

Also, you should be allowed to change, remove, or add only one word (plus particles and/or copula). And you should only be allowed to remove a word if it's clever and/or funny :ojigi: Japanese sentences can be pretty long, after all....

For everyone that's not playing, you should give it a try. This game has the potential to be like 10x funnier than しりとり.

Thanks for your suggestions, I have added in to the rules of the game.

この東京で値段が高いレストランのウェトレスのお母さんはびみょうらしいです。

(perhaps i'm overlooking something obvious.. but what is that all about, just before the みょう towards the end? I'm just not getting it's meaning!)

びみょう and みょう are different words. As for what びみょう actually means, the literal translation is something like "subtle" or maybe "delicate". The practical meaning, however, is a little bit more complicated. It's commonly used when you don't like something (for example food), but you don't want to come out and say まずい or きらい. We were not complimenting this waitress' mother.
