nicktさん、 i don't know where she found the word 外様, but i can only think of it used in in reference to 外様大名 (とざまだいみょう）, meaning the feudal lords who descended from the losers of the Battle of Sekigahara, it translated as Outside Daimyo in english, and the with that in mind the meaning should be pretty clear 外 (outside) 様 (-sama, honorable person). the word has no practical application i know of outside of this use... but, kitty-chanさん you definitely picked a good word!
