Is "kun" disrespectful?

Postby seanolan » November 17th, 2007 10:45 pm

I'm not asking if it is rude, or how it is used. I am asking if the use shows less respect, a lack of respect, from the person using it to the person receiving it. This is not the same as rudeness. You can be less than respectful and still be perfectly polite, and you can be rude while still showing respect. I want to know (I've asked several Japanese teachers of English, and they have answered, but I would like you guys' opinion) if you think using "kun" is a less-respectful, a disrespectful, form of address, since it implies either familiar status or social superiority?

If you use it in the correct way then it's not rude, and if you use it in a wrong way then it can be rude.
Basically it depends on context.
