Difference between 試みる and 試す

Hi everyone!

I would like to have an explanation between the words 試みる　and 試す。

試みる　(kokoromiru) translates as To try, to test.
試す (tamesu) translates as To attempt, to test.

Is there any difference in the test parts of the words? Like, one means "To test someone" and the other could mean "To test something" or anything like that. I have no idea and would be so grateful if someone could explain it to me.
And the try and attempt part. It almost mean the same thing, doesn't it? "To try" and "to attempt".

Based on the entries in 大辞林, I can't see any difference between the two. In fact, according to a thesaurus, they're listed as synonyms.

I occasionally see a couple of synonymous words like this, and try to associate one English word with each of them, and make the same sort of judgment you would when deciding whether to use 'try' or 'attempt' in English. It's usually helpful to see a couple of example sentences though, because synonyms aren't always interchangeable.

Judging from the ones in my dictionary, it appears that 試みる is closer to attempt, to test, and 試す is closer to to try out, to test. Here are the example sentences:

新しい方法を試みよう。
この新しい冷凍食品を試そう。
