Can anyone translate this for me?

Postby NickT » September 9th, 2007 3:01 pm

Can anyone translate the following for me?

コンピューターにさせる仕事を考えてきめられる人

It is taken from a listening comprehension passage, the overall context of which is a company talking about what kind of employees they are looking for.

I've typed up the surrounding passage to give a bit of extra context:

最近コンピューターの技術がある人、コンピューターが使える人が多くなってきました。しかし、使えるだけではだめなんです。コンピューターにさせる仕事を考えてきめられる人、会社にはそういう人が一番必要です。

I understand what all the individual words and verb-forms mean, I just can't quite get my head around what it means as a whole. Any ideas?

From the context, I think it means not just people who are able to use computers (as tools), but people who think about how to make computers do the work for them. So people who think of new ways to make computers work for the company. Taking work that humans would do and giving that work to computers.

Thanks Jason, that is helpful. So, would the following breakdown/analysis be correct?

コンピューターにさせる to make a computer do (something)

コンピューターにさせる仕事 work that the computer is made to do; to make the computer do the work (is one translation more correct than the other?)

きめられる人 a person that is able to decide.

考えてきめられる人 a person that thinks about and is able to come to a decision

コンピューターにさせる仕事を考えてきめられる人 a person that thinks about and is able to come to a decision to make the computer to do the work.

Translated into more natural English: A person who is able to think of ways to make computers do the work for them.

I understand what it means (I think), but it just seems like a really strange way to say it. Also it seems pretty hard to me for a 3級 level JLPT question (It is from the Unicom 3級 これで大丈夫 聴解問題 listening comprehension practice tapes.)

Yes. Though a slightly more accurate literal translation would be:

a person who can think and decide the work that computers are made to do
