Kansai-ben

Postby lonna_senpai » August 12th, 2007 2:03 am

I heard that there are a lot of teachig jobs in Osaka. So I was wondering if there were any good books to learn Kansai-ben or any good sites. I know get away with standard Japanese but I want to learn some slang! Arigato :)

This is the most comprehensive book on Kansai-benI know of, and have used it myself :

Also, listen to some of the podcasts from this site; it's made by Alex Brooke, a British guy who's lived in Osaka for about 10 years, and he introduces quite a bit of Kansai-ben in his lessons, which are very informal and sometimes even a bit chaotic (but always fun!) :

Roflmao. Oosakaben

From there it gets progressively worse. :) But basically thats Osaka-ben aside from a few other specifics and special vocabulary words, which you will learn as you live here or date someone from Osaka (as long as you try to speak Osaka-ben).

Its like trying to learn gangster slang from a book. Just go down to the hood yo! :) Lemme know when you get here.

Actually, talkin to my girly my osaka-ben is really really toned down compared to hers. Think like east la thick dialect homie. :) But its a start.

Awww...shoot. I forgot about the Kansai-ben. I'm going to be a student in Osaka next April...
I figure I'm going to come across it, but ...I dunno if I should derive from the language accent I'm learning right now....

Kya! Is it really as bad as my Tokyo friends say ???

LOL. Bad? I get sh1t when I travel Japan and speak Kansaiben, it comes with the territory, but inside Kansai if you don't speak it I think you'll sound like a girl. :) Na, lower than that, the girls will sound more manly than a guy speaking kantoben, that is unless you got slang kantoben down (daze, dazo, etc). Come across it? Roflmao, what an understatement. :D

Yeah, I figured. I just had high hopes that I wouldn't have to add to my study load. Darn...
I guess I'll get to learning some... >.<
I going to be with a whole bunch of people in a private highschool of some sort and I really think understand them is kinda crucial... and I have a sickening feeling I'm not going to...

Bleh. Well, thanks for the warning.

Osaka-ben is practically the same as kanto-ben with just a few things changed (aside from actually different terms). A lot harder than osaka-ben is gonna be the slang kids use. First things first though, learn japanese, learn to speak informally, and the rest will just fall into place. :D
