strange/funny phrases in japanese

Postby giulianoz » June 26th, 2007 7:17 pm

Hello,
a friend told me about a strange phrase in japanese that's pronounced like a long serie of "ooo"s (like ooo oooooo ooo o ooo ooo" :) the translation should be something similar to "the emperor travels with a large group of bodygards" (not the exxact translation, he doesn't remember well). I suspect the phrase is actually in chinese, even if he insists it's in japanese. Someone knows what he's talking about ? and maybe other interesting phrases or word games in japanese ?

thanks

giuliano

giulianoさん the only part I can help you with is that the word "king" is 王 (おう) in Japanese so your friend could be on the right track:wink:
I'll look further into this but for now...

又ね

Hello Jordiさん,
thanks for your help. :)

Does 王 (おう) refer to a "western style king" or to the emperor of Japan too (天皇、てんおう if I remember well :) )?

thanks

こんいちわ、
I've found also 倣(ほう) that should be "imitate" but also "follow"

I don't know the phrase you're referring to, but here's a start:

王 を 覆おう
ou wo ooou

Unfortunatly I can't find the one you're referring to but there are Japanese tongue twisters 早口言葉[はやぐちことば]at these links

Wikipedia in Japanese but with kana
Romaji collection
Difficult Kanji site
middle ground The one with 3 readings of 子 is interesting.

My favorite has always been
丹羽の庭には二羽の鶏は俄に鰐を食べた 。
にわ の にわ には にわ の にわとり は にわに わに を たべた。
in (mr) Niwa's garden two chickens suddenly ate a crocodile.

However, although I've found this on a couple of Japanese websites, a Japanese friend of mine had problems with it. But I think one of the big problems was the idea of chickens eating a crocodile!
