Japanese Appliances in the US

I bought a Japanese rice cooker at a garage sale about 3 weeks ago, it was brand new but had no instruction booklet. The model is a ＳＲ－ＩＨＳＥＶ１８ National/Panasonic Rice Cooker. I translated all the buttons, menus etc. but it still won't cook the rice, the water only gets very hot, but the rice remains uncooked , Is there a power difference between Japan and the US? and if so can I buy an adapter? any other ideas on why it can't cook?

The power difference is negligible.
I don't think it'd make much of a difference.

Does the rice not cook at all?

should work - will probably take about 40 minutes, are you leaving it long enough? Are you overfilling the water?

As a veteran of garage sales, I have to say: it's probably broken. Sounds like it's stuck in 'warm' mode.

I was on vacation for the last couple of days and I had no internet access and thus couldn't check the forum.

I thought that maybe I mistranslated some things, so I'll link to pictures of my rice cooker and I hope you can help me

annieさん: the rice does not cook at all. After leaving the rice in the cooker for the hour it asked for, the cooker beeped and switched to "warm mode". I opened it, and the uncooked rice was just sitting there submerged in really hot water.

JonBさん：as I told annieさん, I'm leaving it in the cooker for all of the time that it requests . On the receptacle where you put the rice, the cooker has different levels marked for different types of rice, I followed the 白米tickmarks when i want to make 御飯 　

rateoforangeさん: it seems that the rice cooker was never used before, as it came in it's original (i think) packaging and it was wrapped in cellophane... all the menus work etc. but the only thing I can't be sure of is what button to press so that the rice cooks

press the red button to cook the rice.
the button with green writing is for setting the timer.
the button on the left of the display tells you that it's in warming mode.

it's possible that you've been using the wrong mode, i guess....
looks like theoretically you could make okayu and sushi rice too.
you could try a few of the different settings, press the メニュー button to cycle through them... i'd start with ふつう

just because it was wrapped doesn't mean that it was new.

I'll try the different modes... if it doesn't work and it is indeed broken, I guess I'll have to pick one up at my local Japanese supermarket

I'm good at pressing buttons!! Though I draw the line on buttons and toilets. Can someone please get in touch with the Toto manufacturer and tell them that more than one button is not needed?!?

A toilet should only be used for its intended purpose, watering the dog, washing the cat, and if it cleaned itself then that would be great.
