Colors

こんばんはみんなーさん!

I've been teaching myself Japanese for about two months now, and I am really, really enjoying it. It's also great to find so many other people who are passionate about learning this language. I also have to say that JPod101 has been a huge help!

But, I have a question for you guys. Are there preferred ways of referring to certain colors who have multiple names in Japanese?

For example, I've found that "orange" is translated into だいだいいろ, but in a recent lesson, Sachiko and Natsuko say that it's オレンジ. Or I've found "pink" translated as ももいろ, but the lesson said it's ピンク. I was wondering, which translations are more commonly used?

ありがとうございます!

I had never heard of 橙色 (だいだいいろ) but it appears to be fairly common.

From googling, I'd say the English-derived forms are more popular, but the older words are still not uncommon. Perhaps this is because the 外来語 refer specifically to a color, whereas the Japanese are literally "bitter orange color" and "peach color".
