Getting a haircut in Japan?!?!?

I was hoping there might be a lesson for this but, after searching through past lessons in all categories, I can't seem to find one :-/

Can anyone help me with some useful phrases to do with getting my hair cut, for example:


Can I make an appointment to have my hair cut? / Do I need an appointment to have my hair cut?

How much will it cost?

I want it to be in the same style, but a little shorter

Can you take out some of the thickness

Can you shave my neck hair

etc.


If anyone can help, I would be immensely greatful - I don't speak much Japanese so it is quite a big problem for me :-/

It looks like Ulver beat me to the punch, but I had to write, if only because I remember being in the exact same situation back when I lived in Japan. It was only by the good graces of a coworker that I was able to avoid some mohawk-ian hair disaster.

Here are some translations, to the best of my ability, in romaji:

Can I make an appointment to have my hair cut?
kamikiri no yoyaku wo torete moraimasen ka?

Do I need an appointment?
yoyaku ga hitsuyou desu ka?

How much will it cost?
ikura desu ka?

I want it to be in the same style, but a little shorter
onaji sutairu de, mou chotto mijikai ga ii desu.

Can you take out some of the thickness? (Can you thin it out a little?)
chotto usukunasette kudasai.
(I'm not sure that "atsui" (thick) and "usui" (thin) would have the correct connotation in Japanese for this situation, but I suspect the stylist would get the idea. Maybe someone can offer a better translation, though.)

Can you shave my neck hair?
kubi no kami wo sotte kudasai.
("eriashi" might actually be a better word than "kubi," as it means "nape of the neck.")

Thanks for the replies everyone... I was suprised that there hadn't already been a podcast on this topic to be honest and was worried I might have to go back to just shaving all my hair off (before I grew it a little, I used to just razor it all over)

cmwatkins - you are a life saver and have (hopefully lol!) provided the answer to my problem... I will be trying to get it done today so will report back on the success/failure of my venture.

One vital correction:
"kamikiri" is incorrect.
I've just been told that "sanpatsu" is the correct term for men and children, and women tend to use "he-a katto" (hair cut).

Btw, I have to ask: did they massage your ears?
Nearly every haircut I got in Japan involved an ear rub at the hair wetting stage. I don't know why, but I never complained

was much more than just an ear massage - had a full head/neck/shoulders massage as well... I certainly ain't the kinda person to say no when a beautiful girl wants to start massaging me haha!
