眠る vs. 練る? (nemeru/neru)

Postby johanrift8358 » September 9th, 2014 9:20 pm

Hey there ! :)

I got one questions about "to sleep" in Japanese,
found 2 verbs named: 眠る (nemuru) and 練る (neru).

What is the different between this 2 ?

in this site:
http://www.yesjapan.com/YJ6/question/42 ... and-nemuru
i found what is incorrect & correct to say it:
3) 私はいつも10時に寝ます。
Watashi wa itusmo juu ji ni nemasu. - CORRECT
I always go to sleep at 10.

4) 私はいつも10時に眠ります。
Watashi wa itsumo juu ji ni nemurimasu. - incorrect

When you talk about the time to go to sleep, "NERU" should be used (see #3).
"NEMURU" is normally used when someone is asleep.

meanwhile in iknow.jp site there is one row under "nemuru":
昨日は8時間眠りました。
きのう は 8 じかん ねむりました。
I slept for eight hours yesterday.

So yesjapan says that when you are talking about time you should use neru,
but in iknow.jp it is used nemuru... :?

I saw that "watashi wa" is dropped in iknow.jp because it says "i slept..."
it can even mean "かのじょ like "She slept..." then it will be correct?
(it was a girl in the pictures)

johanrift8358 san,

konnichiwa. :D

Firstly, you want to know the difference between 眠る and 寝る, right?
It not 練るbecause it means to knead,  to thicken into a paste (stirring over a flame), to polish (a plan, etc.),  to refine,  to elaborate, to work out and so on.
You should pay attention to kanji.

By the way, 眠る indicates taking a rest and it doesn’t mean laying down. You can sleep sitting.

On the other hand, when you use 寝る, it shows you lay down and also indicates a regular everyday activity.

The example 3) has いつも which is one of frequency adverbs and tells about regular activities so 眠りますdoesn’t match it.
いつも、たいてい、よく、あまり、ぜんぜん should be followed by 寝ます/寝ません.

When you use 昨日, you are talking about what you did yesterday only, so it doesn’t indicate regularity, therefore, you can use 眠りました.

Regarding omitting a subject, subjects are often omitted in the Japanese language when it’s obvious.

I hope it could help you.
