Reporter speech

Postby molly3209 » September 3rd, 2013 3:01 pm

こんにちは、

I'm following some Japanese natives on Twitter to practice my reading skills. (They are all "official", not "personal" accounts.) One is a reporter and I have trouble deciphering his texts. This is possibly due to the short-hand that Twitter often requires, but I think there are also "reporter-formal" type terms.

"[fans]へご報告…明日発売の[magazine name]100記念号で2名、来週発売の101号で3名、[actor's name]の取材現場へ同行できる読者プレゼントが当たります!"

(I've put generic info in [] to replace the specific info.)

Question #1: what does 名 mean is this context? I found an online dictionary which said it could be used as a counter in some formal situations like seat reservations. Does 2名 mean two people?
Question #2: I don't know how to translate 当たります. I found a few references to the [noun]が 当たります usage and it seemed to be [noun] was a prize to be won?
Question #3: 同行できる means "able to accompany"? Is "accompany" used in a literal sense and something/someone is physically going to the interview location? Or is this a vicarious meaning and it's a reference to the readers of the article "accompanying" the actor to the interview location.

Normally I end my posts with ありがとうございます but would it be better to say よろしくお願いします in this case?
Any help is greatly appreciated!

Hi Molly,

"[fans]へご報告…明日発売の[magazine name]100記念号で2名、来週発売の101号で3名、[actor's name]の取材現場へ同行できる読者プレゼントが当たります!"

Now, Japanese is a much more compact language than English, so I am adding a lot of words to make the English sound better. This is not an easy sentence for sure, but I believe what it might say is:

A message for our fans....Tomorrow, at the sale of the 100th anniversary issue of "magazine name", 2 people will win the chance to accompany "actor's name" to our interview location, and next week at the sale of the 101st issue 3 people will win this chance.

Hope this helps, and I hope I am not completely wrong.

Have fun reading :blob:

Yes, 名 is the honorific equivalent of the counter 人. As I understand it, it's used by the staff in restaurants, theatres and the like, so there's probably a strong connection with seat reservations.

Tracel-さん、

答えはありがとうございました!

I was reading the sentence the same way and thinking "This is too good to be true?" Previously there were some hand-drawn or autographed items provided by the actor as prizes...so...(^_^;).... I'd like to post a translation of the tweet but I'm really hesitant to do so because I don't want to falsely get everyone's hopes up lol

どうしようかな~ (I wonder what to do....) [Did I write that correctly in Japanese? ;) ]

モリーさん、

あの、私の翻訳は正しいかどうか、ちょっとわかりませんよ。 (I don't know if my translation is correct or not)。たぶん日本人様に質問をしたほうがいいかもしれません(It might be better if you asked a Japanese person)。I wouldn't want to get people's hopes up either (now I wonder how you would say that in Japanese  )。

I think どうしようかなー is the correct way to express "what should I do....."

モリーさん、トラセルさん、マイケルさん、
こんにちは :D
Thank you very much for great explanations, トラセルさん&マイケルさん :flower:

The translation of Tracel-san and explanation on 名 by Michael-san were both spot-on!
As 名 is a polite counter for people, it's often (and usually) used in the form of 名様 unless we mention to
our own group. To be perfectly honest with you, the original Japanese sentence sounds a bit "lack of
respect" to fans...also not really "correct"?
If I were the writer, I'd change it to
[fans]へご報告
創刊100号突破記念として抽選で、明日発売の[magazine name]100号からのご応募で2名様、来週発売の101号からのご応募で3名様に、[actor's name]の取材現場へ同行できる読者プレゼントが当たります。

It still sounds a bit long and not natural :(
I'd understand exactly the same way Tracel-san translated, but it took me a while before I actually understood
the Japanese sentence  I wonder if this magazine editors actually want the readers to apply for such chances

奈津子せんせい、トラセルさん、マイケルさん、

どうもありがとうございました!
I missed some replies here, すみません! I missed some notifications
And I think my slow typing made me miss マイケルさん's post altogether -_-;

I think the "style" of the reporter is a little rough around the edges lol and he's a little close to the fans. Also, Twitter allows only 140(?) characters in a tweet. That might explain the strange wording lol (At least you can say a lot more in Japanese than you can in English in 140 characters! )

皆さん、助けてくれてありがとうございます!Now I just have to find out who won
