でして like まして?

Postby trykyn » February 2nd, 2010 7:45 am

i wondered if you can use the same construction for です as for ~ます verbs, when you want to put it in the て-form, i a polite setting.

for ~ます verbs, you can use まして、
like in あけましておめでとう
or any other polite setting, 事故がありましておくれてしまいました。 or something like that..

now i wondered if this works for です as well
for example: 妻の誕生日でして。。。行けません。

is this a common correct usage? I saw it in a book once, but never heard it been used so far...

てform of copula = で

I'm no authority on any matter Japanese, so take with a grain of salt, but I believe the て form of the copula です is で。

This is why when using な adjectives, and combining more than one, you use で。

i.e. きれいで,素敵で、とてもいいです。

The short answer is "yes." People do use it (でして) in particularly polite situations.
