Nante Nante NANTE!!!

Postby Animatrixie » December 30th, 2007 1:49 am

I'm having the hardest time figuring out exactly what this word means.

I did get the idea from one of the lessons that it can be used before an adjective to express shock or surprise at something, but what about in the case of a song, like, for example:

もう恋なんてしない (なんて...)

I'm a major Macky fan, and would love to be able to understand some of his songs, but I've been told that this title, for example, contains flagrant NANTE abuse! ;)

Can anyone please help shed some light? ^_^ Thanks!!!

なんて is a pretty colloquial thing, it generally makes something less specific while at the same time adds emphasis to it. For example 恋をしない "not do love" but 恋なんてしない "not do anythin' like love." Throw もう in there and you get もう恋なんてしない "not gonna do anything 'love' anymore." I suppose you could liken it to being a more negative version of でも in such sentences as お茶でもしない? (kinda cheesy pickup line-- wanna do tea or something?) In the song, the singer is feeling fed up with love.

Hope that helps. Corrections/additions always welcome. :D

もっと ”なんて” なんて もう。。。 ^_

Psy! どうもありがとうございます! ^_^

Macky's music is so littered with NANTE, it was really kind of you to shed some light on that!!! Can I take a guess at something, and would you be so kind, again, as to tell me whether it's an accurate guess? It's a part of a different song full of nante! I am guessing at some of these words, since there are, as of yet, no printed lyrics I was able to find online (neither in romaji or kana), so here goes:

...Wow!
僕一人だけ
かんじられる ような (it sounds like he's saying "youna," but I'm not positive, you'd probably know this! ^_^ )
幸せ なんて もう
僕には いわない!

"Shiawase nante mou...!" can I guess might mean "Happiness and all that (type of) stuff!" ???

I'll take an even further stab in the dark and try to translate this little bitty - PLEASE correct my mistakes, and there are bound to be plenty - I'm just a beginner yet! ^_^

Wow!...
(when) I'm just by myself,
I feel something like
happiness and stuff like that
I don't say it (is it like saying "but I don't admit it to myself"?)

Not sure there's enough context there to make it all out, but that particular phrase ends there, so I'm guessing it may well be a complete thought at that point.

Does it work? Does it make any sense? *snicker* It kind of sounds like listening to a 17-year-old talk about his love life, the way I have it worked out! ^_^

Thanks again so much for your help!

ごめんなさい! まちがいます!

Postby Animatrixie » December 30th, 2007 2:44 pm

Wait, wait......I think I heard it wrong.

I thought the word he said was "iWAnai"....Now that I've listened again, it sounds like it might be "iRAnai".....which would make it "I don't need it!"...Wouldn't it???...Or would it?...

僕には いらない!

Ugh...Now that would open up a new can of worms....Can I guess and say that I wonder if it means that he's saying, "Wow! You know, now that I'm alone, I don't need to feel happiness and all that nonsense!"

Er....For such a happy sounding song, I really wonder if that's the sentiment there...It seems as though the earlier lyrics are saying that his girlfriend suddenly split on him and he can't figure out what the heck happened, so....Maybe he throws his hands up and says "Oh, whatever! I don't need this crap anyway!" LOL! Sounds kinda similar to "もう恋なんてしない”ね? ww ^_^ ....

Please give your further input, it's really helping me crack this nante thing open!!!
Sorry for the mistake(s)!!!

Hi again, Animatrixie. Glad I could be of assistance. It took a little bit of searching but I was able to find the song those lyrics on a site called "Kashi Time" (歌詞タイム), home to the largest repository of Japanese song lyrics I've yet to find online:

The SONG (wow!).
The AUTHOR (槇原敬之).
The MAIN PAGE (歌詞タイム).

Anyway, on to the interpretation:

...Wow!

. . .

Wait, wait......I think I heard it wrong.

僕には いらない!

First of all, I'd like to congratulate you on your self-correction, for it is いらない. You are also right in that it opens a whole can of worms, for it is a reference to an earlier part of the song:

wow!
僕一人だけ 感じられるような
幸せなんて もう幸せと呼べない

I think part of your difficulty in interpretation comes from ような, which is a grammatical construction meaning "like." 感じられるような幸せ is literally "happiness like {I} can feel," and when you tack on 僕一人だけ (I alone), it becomes "happiness like I can feel on my own." What happens when you tack なんて onto all of that? Take a guess. No, really. Try it! The meaning of なんて hasn't changed at all...

... 僕一人だけ感じられるような幸せなんて becomes "anything like/stuff like/something resembling (pick one ;)) the happiness that I can feel on my own." Added to that is もう幸せと呼べない, which means "{I} can't call {it} happiness anymore." Back to your verse:

wow!
僕一人だけ 感じられるような
幸せなんて もう僕には要らない

As you can see, your ear served you well. This is basically the same thing except instead of "I can't call [what I knew before alone as happiness] it happiness anymore," it says "I don't need/it isn't necessary for me anymore." These two phrases, in turn, are in reference to what comes before:

wow!
こんな事しか僕は言えなかった
初めて君を見た時の
この気持ちあらわせる言葉なんて無い

I'm not going to run down the grammar because this message is long enough already, but here's what it means:

Wow!
It's all I could say.
There isn't anything like words
(なんて again!) that could express this feeling
of the first time I saw you.

Now this is all fine and good, and based on what I have written out here, you would be justified believing that it's about someone's koibito, and that it's little more than a typical Japanese love song... but not quite. What I find (even as a man) rather heartwarming is that the singer is referring to his newborn child.

ほんとにWOW! ^_^ なんて驚きましたんですよ! (err....was THAT a correct usage of our friend "nante?" ^^; Please correct!) .....I have to tell you...I knew that song was very cute and felt a very pure feeling from it, but....I had no idea it was about that!!! Very VERY sweet!!!

Psy, again, thank you SO MUCH for such an excellent and thorough explanation! It was so cool that you even looked up the song lyrics to help get the context together! Really...I'm extremely appreciative. Actually, more than you may know - my 婚約者 and I will be apart for the next 4 months, rendering things all but unbearable at this time, and the way I keep on keeping on is that I've got the music of 槇原敬之 to be comforted by, cheesy though that may sound! Especially since we are considering starting a family soon, discovering the meaning of this particular song truly HAS BEEN heartwarming to me.....Thank you!!! ^_^

Er....Sorry to stray from the topic, I hope it's not too much of an annoyance to anyone else who might be reading...Again - THANK YOU! You really made my NYE! If I don't get a chance to hear from you beforehand - あけまして!おめでとございます!ことしもよろしくおねがいします! ^_^

All in a day's work. It's my pleasure that I could in some small way help you through a difficult time. As for your Japanese, I get your meaning, but generally you'd say なんて in that sense for observations, and not normally with verbs... なんてかわいい子 "what a cute child," なんてきれいな景色 "what beautiful scenery," なんて暑~い "cripes it's hot out!" In your case I'd replace なんて with とても or 非常に, but that's me-- I can't certify absolute correctness on the matter.

Congratulations on your engagement! I wish you both "あけましておめでとうございます" I hope whatever it is keeping you two apart soon resolves itself.
