| さくら: Ah 何か良い事があった did you have something good? |
| Peter: えっ、一目瞭然じゃないですか It’s not obvious? |
| さくら: あーそうですね。一目瞭然ですね。 |

| さくら: はい、元気なのが一目瞭然です |
| Peter: Yep. It’s obvious why I am so 元気 today. It’s because we have one of my favorite Yojijukugo coming up next. |

| Peter: I kind of think it suits our relationship. |
| さくら: は？意気投合している Ah sorry, I said it. |
| Peter: You gave it away. |
| さくら: Ah sorry ごめんなさい |
| Peter: But そう思わない you don’t think so. We are like 意気投合 |
| さくら: えー！意気投合している？ |
| Peter: Yeah. |
| さくら: どうかあな。 |
| Peter: Well let’s first give everybody. |
| さくら: Okay. |

| さくら: Yojijukugo. |
| Peter: Is. |
| さくら: 意気投合 |
| Peter: Which means to get along so well or to hit it off. So let’s hear it one more time. Then, we will go through the characters, then we will go through the compounds and then we will cover everything. |
| さくら: Yes. |
| Peter: Okay one more time. |
| さくら: 意気投合 |
| Peter: The first character is |
| さくら: 意 |
| Peter: Idea. Second, |
| さくら: 気 |
| Peter: Mind or spirit. Third, |
| さくら: 投 |
| Peter: Throw. |
| さくら: 合 |
| Peter: Fit. |
| さくら: 意気投合 |
| Peter: Let’s take a look at the first two, the compound. |
| さくら: 意気 |
| Peter: Mind and idea. Then we have |
| さくら: 投合 |
| Peter: Two things that completely match with each other. So both mind and idea completely fit together with each other. |
| さくら: Yes. |
| Peter: Sakura and Peter. |
| さくら: Not quite sure. |
| Peter: Let’s now cover the grammatical usage. |
| さくら: Okay. |
| Peter: How do we use this? |
| さくら: You add suru after 意気投合 意気投合する |
| Peter: So that would be to get along extremely well or to fit perfect together. Okay what about context. What kind of context will we use this in? |
| さくら: You meet somebody maybe for the first time, you don’t know that person well, but when after you met, you find out that you get along well with that person and after that, maybe you talk to someone about it, 彼ととても意気投合した |
| Peter: We hit it off. |
| さくら: Yes. |
| Peter: We got along great. |
| さくら: Umm… |
| Peter: 意気投合You know, I will be very honest like I’ve never even heard this expression but I wanted to use it many times thinking back now because I usually – like there are certain people like I met this guy the other day and 意気投合した |
| さくら: そうそうそう、Perfect usage ね |
| Peter: I just copied you. |
| さくら: そうそう、そういう時、そういう時 |
| Peter: 有難うございます。 |
| さくら: So you don’t use it when you know that person well already. |
| Peter: Yeah wow! And this seems like a very high frequency phrase. |
| さくら: Umm yes. |
| Peter: Or depending like how friendly you are. |
| さくら: そうですね。 That’s true. 彼女のお父さんと、野球の話で意気投合したよ。 |
| Peter: So I hit it off with a father talking about baseball. |
| さくら: Umm… |
| Peter: Can we have that sentence one more time. |
| さくら: 彼女のお父さんと、野球の話で意気投合したよ。 |
| Peter: So let’s have the first part one more time. That is, |
| さくら: 彼女のお父さん |
| Peter: So she followed by の possessive her father. |
| さくら: と |
| Peter: Particle. This particle here is with followed by |
| さくら: 野球の話 |
| Peter: Baseball talking about, baseball talking and here it’s marked with de. |
| さくら: で |
| Peter: So the tool by which they hit it off. その話で followed by |
| さくら: 意気投合したよ |
| Peter: Hit it off. So I hit it off with her father talking about baseball 野球が大事です |
| さくら: そう、そうですね。 |
| Peter: Baseball is important. |
| さくら: So baseball – higher chance of 意気投合. So if you like baseball, so generation がね、広いからね like old people like baseball and like also young kids too. |
| Peter: It’s funny you say that. I went to – we are kind of off track here but I went to a party and yeah, I was able to talk to a person who was older talking about baseball. |
| さくら: Yes そうそうそう |
| Peter: And if we say baseball, the marines – take a look at marines. |
| さくら: Of course. |

| Peter: Okay. Next we have another Yojijukugo but this one umm is not so 絶好調 like feeling great. One more time Sakura san, |
| さくら: 意気消沈 えっ？わかんない |
| Peter: Okay. This one is, |
| さくら: 意気消沈 |
| Peter: Be depressed, downhearted. Let’s go through the first few characters. |
| さくら: 意 |
| Peter: Idea. |
| さくら: 気 |
| Peter: Mind. |
| さくら: 消 |
| Peter: Extinguish. |
| さくら: 沈 |
| Peter: Sink. |
| さくら: Sink, yes. |
| Peter: Wow! One more time altogether. |
| さくら: 意気消沈 |
| Peter: Wow, to be depressed, to be downhearted. Now the first compound and when I say compound, I am referring to the first two characters, the first two Chinese characters inside this four character idiomatic phrase. The first two – actually the first two kanji character compound is the same as the previous one. |
| さくら: Yes. |
| Peter: Idea and mind. Okay but the second part is completely different I’d say. |
| さくら: 消沈 |
| Peter: Which means something disappears and sinks. Okay we will get through this one quickly. Let’s go over the grammatical usage like how you would use this idiomatic phrase, this Yojijukugo. So Sakura san, what would we do here? |
| さくら: You add suru. |
| Peter: Same as the previous one. |
| さくら: Yes. 意気消沈する |
| Peter: Okay and then it becomes a verb. Now what about the usage, as it’s a kind of heavy phrase, when would we use this one? |
| さくら: 意気消沈 is used when someone had motivation or energy to do something but something happened and they were discouraged or depressed. So something failed and they are discouraged or depressed and you don’t feel like doing anything anymore. |
| Peter: Sakura san, are you…. |
| さくら: 意気消沈した |
| Peter: You look so sad. I feel so bad talking about this. |
| さくら: Oh really? ぜんぜん |
| Peter: 泣きそう |
| さくら: No, no, no I was just imagining. |
| Peter: I feel so bad bringing this word into the studio now. I am sorry. |
| さくら: なんで |
| Peter: Okay so Sakura san, can we have an example sentence? |
| さくら: 彼は大学の入学試験に落ちて、すっかり意気消沈している |
| Peter: He failed the University entrance examination and he is so depressed. |
| さくら: So it’s a situation where you want to 何だろう、励ます。励ましてあげたい |
| Peter: Like support them or help them. |
| さくら: Yes そうそうそうそうそう。 |
| Peter: And I guess like much like any other word, you know, we mentioned that it could be pretty severe but much like any other phrase or word, it kind of depends on the context in which it’s used. |
| さくら: Yes the seriousness level |
| Peter: Yeah. So it could be very serious or not so serious. Well relative. I think it’s how the person perceives it. |
| さくら: そうですね。 |
| Peter: For a lot of people, sports are so important. So they would use 意気消沈 about losing or something where…. |
| さくら: Yes, yes… |
| Peter: Sakura san that would be kind of indifferent for you. So it depends on the person’s perception. |
| さくら: そうですね。 |
| Peter: Well, it depends on the context of the sentence. |
| さくら: そうですね。 |
| Peter: Okay now inside the PDF, we have several more examples, nice clear write up and we have a couple of other kind of related terms that we didn’t get to inside of this lesson. | Peter: And again, we could use suru here. |
| さくら: It’s more like 意気揚々となんとかする |
| Peter: So kind of like an adverb. |
| さくら: そうそうそうそう、そう |
| Peter: So exaltedly. |
| さくら: Yes. So you are in high spirits and you are proud and you are going to do something like exciting. |
| Peter: Okay. |
| さくら: 意気揚々とjapanesepod.101のスタジオに来ました |

| Peter: Or… |
