Lesson 17. |
Watch Out For This Kanji!. |
In today’s kanji video lesson, you learn how to draw and pronounce the kanji for eyes. |
Learn the 音読み (on'yomi) and 訓読み (kun'yomi) readings as well as some super easy tricks for memorizing this Japanese kanji. |
Okay let’s draw the kanji for this lesson. The meaning of this kanji is eye. |
Now we are going to have a trick for memorizing this kanji in just a minute but let’s first look at the reading. |
Remember there are two readings in Japanese kanji? One is 音読み (on'yomi) the On reading, the other one is 訓読み (kun'yomi) , the Kun reading. Long story short, the On reading comes from Chinese and the Kun reading comes from Japanese. |
Now let’s look at the On reading for today’s kanji. The On reading for this kanji is モク (moku). The Kun reading for this kanji is め (me) . |
Now remember the trick that I was telling about? Let’s look at that now. |
You can kind of see the eyes here. It’s kind of scary but you get the point. |
Now let’s look at how to draw this kanji. Pay attention to the stroke order, it’s very important. Start from the left top 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. Let’s try one more time. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. |
Now let’s look at some sample words. |
Ta-dah. |
The On reading for this kanji is moku. Here we have ちゅうもく (chūmoku) this word means to pay attention. |
The Kun reading for this kanji is me. Here we have めだま (medama). This word means an eyeball or a star item. |

HideHi everyone! Do you know any other words that use 目?
Hi スチイーヴ(ステイーヴ),
Thank you for your comment!
I'm sorry for this late reply.
Yes, you are absolutely right.
You really understand how kanji works!
Sorry I wrote your name mistyped to make it certain that this my comment should be to you.
I sometimes have mistakes in typing, too...
Hope you enjoy learning Japanese with us!
Sincerely,
Miho

Would be great if you had an edit function in your comments section. I typed my name in katakana a little too quickly and didn't notice until I hit Submit. I did something similar in another lesson where I moved too fast and left the "desu" off the end of a sentence and had to submit a second comment to correct it... Name isn't スチイーヴ, it's ステイーヴ. :)
I keep seeing people asking why there are the same readings for different kanji yet have different meanings. They're just homophones. Yes, they all have the same sound but are spelled differently and have different meanings. You can't use them interchangeably even though they sound alike. Many kanji are pronounced the same but look different, like a different spelling, and mean something different. Knowing what the kanji MEANS is just as important as how it's pronounced. Since kana can only give one spelling of a pronunciation due to its sound limitations, you must use kanji in order to know what "spelling" and therefore what context is appropriate. So think of kanji as a spelling, as well as a meaning and pronunciation.
Hi スティーブン,
Thank you for studying with us and leaving the comment!
Although the on-reading is the same between 木 and 目, you can't use these two interchangeably.
There are many kanji which share the same on-reading or kun-reading but each has different meanings. Kanji learning is all about memorization... Even Japanese native children need to memorize them in elementary school.
Sincerely,
Miki H

こんにちは。しつもんがあります。
Are 目 and 木 interchangeable? Why is the On-yomi the same for both?
Can you write Thursday:
木ようび
or
目ようび?
I'm confused.
ありがとうございます!
Joao Centeio san,
Konnichiwa.
Why…that is the Japanese language.
Even though they have the same reading, those meanings are different each other.

Why is "tree" - moku, and "eye" - moku?

@Steve Stier San:
... and why the moon is round ? I prefer the sun but the moon is popping up without my knowledge which is something angering me.....
In my understanding this is one helpful reason for actually having kanji Aleksander, because of the fact that there are many many homophones (words that have the same pronunciation and spelling but different meanings). With kanji (as well as context) , we would be able to immediately know which meaning we should be using.
How come this kanji also have "Moku" just like the kanji for a tree?
Does this happen a lot, that many kanjis have some of the same readings?
I notice that many things that used to be round (sun, eye, moon) become squarish or rectangular but with lines through them that once indicated the center. Is this a common pattern?
Why was this lesson sent to me. I registered for a free membership, but have not yet signed up for a paid subscription. Yet, I get lessons emailed to me which I cannot access without a paid subscription. Is this a glitch in your system or a marketing technique which is angering me?
