Remember there are two readings in kanji? The first one is the 音読み (on'yomi) the On reading, the second one is the 訓読み (kun'yomi) the Kun reading. Long story short, the On reading comes from Chinese and the Kun readings comes from Japanese. |
The On reading for this kanji is セン (sen). The Kun reading for this kanji is ち (chi) . |

There is a Japanese legend that crane has a 1000 years of life. So picture a crane head here and here we have wings and a crane always stands with one leg. Now you see the relation between a crane and 1000? |
