INTRODUCTION
Natsuko: こんにちは、なつこです。
Naomi: なおみです。
Chris: Chris here. Give Me Your Best Japanese Advice.
Naomi: ビジネスで役立つ日本語の第三回目です。
Natsuko: 前回は、Webデザインの会社に勤めている中田さんが、お客さんの会社へ行って、打ち合わせをしていましたね。
Naomi: はい。
Natsuko: 今回は、中田さんが、その打ち合わせの結果を上司に報告するところから始まります。
Chris: In the last lesson, the web designer Mr. Nakata went directly to his client's company for a meeting. In today's lesson, Mr. Nakata will share the results of that meeting with his boss.
Naomi: ということで、今回は、誰と誰の会話でしょうか。
Natsuko: 中田さんと、中田さんの上司との会話です。中田さんは、上司からアドバイスをもらうようですよ。
Naomi: どんなアドバイスをもらえるんでしょうね。
Chris: What kind of advice will Mr. Nakata get from his boss?
Natsuko: それでは、聞いてみましょう。
DIALOGUE
中田:課長、昨日、ILLトラベルに打ち合わせに行ってきましたので、課長のお時間のよろしいときに、報告させていただきたいのですが。。
課長:今でもいいわよ。で、どうだった？
中田:先方は、Webサイトの全面リニューアルと、ツアー日程を自由に決められるシステムを構築したいという要望をお持ちなんです。
課長:で、契約にこぎつけられそう？
中田:十分、脈はあると思います。
課長:そう、よかったじゃない。
中田:ただ、ちょっと問題がありまして。。。担当者の方がIT関係に疎いようなんです。
課長:あら、中田君だって、まだ経験が浅いんだから、ITに詳しいクライアントだったら、大変よ。
やり込められちゃうじゃない。逆に、ラッキーだと思いなさい。
中田:それもそうですね。
それで、来週までに、提案と見積もりを持っていくことになってるんですが、何から始めたらいいでしょうか。
課長:そうねぇ。まずは、ILLトラベルの競合相手のWebサイトをリサーチすることね。
そうすると、どんなサイトが使いやすいか、どんな機能が必要か見えてくるはずよ。
それから案を作ってみればいいと思うわ。
中田:わかりました！ありがとうございました。失礼します。
Natsuko: 次は、英語が入ります。
中田:課長、昨日、ILLトラベルに打ち合わせに行ってきましたので、課長のお時間のよろしいときに、報告させていただきたいのですが。。
Chris: Chief, yesterday I went to a meeting with ILL Travel, and when you have time, I wanted to inform you.
課長:今でもいいわよ。で、どうだった？
Chris: Now is fine. And- how was it?
中田:先方は、Webサイトの全面リニューアルと、ツアー日程を自由に決められるシステムを構築したいという要望をお持ちなんです。
Chris: Their demands were a complete renewal of the website, and they also want a system built so that the tour dates can be freely chosen.
課長:で、契約にこぎつけられそう？
Chris: Well, do you think we can reach an agreement?
中田:十分、脈はあると思います。
Chris: Yes, I definitely think we can.
課長:そう、よかったじゃない。
Chris: Well, then good for you.
中田:ただ、ちょっと問題がありまして。。。
Chris: But there's a little problem…
中田:担当者の方がIT関係に疎いようなんです。
Chris: the person in charge seems to be unfamiliar with IT-related things.
課長:あら、中田君だって、まだ経験が浅いんだから、ITに詳しいクライアントだったら、大変よ。
Chris: Oh, well even you, Mr. Nakata, don't have much experience, so if it were a client who knew a lot about IT, it would be trouble.
課長:やり込められちゃうじゃない。
Chris: You'd be talked into a corner.
課長:逆に、ラッキーだと思いなさい。
Chris: On the contrary, you should think yourself lucky.
中田:それもそうですね。
Chris: That's true.
中田:それで、来週までに、提案と見積もりを持っていくことになってるんですが、何から始めたらいいでしょうか。
Chris: And by next week, it's been decided that the proposal and a quotation will be brought to them. I wonder what I should start with.
課長:そうねぇ。
Chris: Let me see.
課長:まずは、ILLトラベルの競合相手のWebサイトをリサーチすることね。
Chris: To begin with, you should research ILL Travel's competitor websites.
課長:そうすると、どんなサイトが使いやすいか、どんな機能が必要か見えてくるはずよ。
Chris: That way, you can see which sites are easy to use and what functions are needed.
課長:それから案を作ってみればいいと思うわ。
Chris: Then I think you should try creating the proposal.
中田:わかりました！ありがとうございました。失礼します。
Chris: Got it! Thank you very much! Please excuse me.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Naomi: 今回の会話は、中田さんが上司へ報告をしていました。クリスさん、ビジネスの「ほうれんそう(報連相)」って、知ってます？
Chris: Is that... business spinach? No?
Naomi: あのー、これは、「ビジネスの基本」と言われているとこなんですが。。なつこさんは、ご存知ですよね。
Natsuko: まぁ、一応社会人の基本と言われていることなので。そう、仕事をスムーズに進めるために、「ほう・れん・そう」は、大切だということになってますよね。
Naomi: はい。
Chris: そんなビジネスに関連する表現があるというのは、かなり日本っぽいって思いますけどね。
Natsuko: あーなるほど、確かにね。
Naomi: まず、「ほう・れん・そう」の「ほう」は、
Natsuko: 報告 (reporting information) の「ほう」、
Naomi: 「れん」は、
Natsuko: 連絡 (contact) の「れん」、
Naomi: 「そう」は、
Natsuko: 相談 (consultation) の「そう」。
Naomi: 上司には、「報告」「連絡」「相談」この三つを必ずしなさいという意味なんですね。
Natsuko: つまり仕事の今の状況を上司に報告すること、あと正しいタイミングで連絡をとること、それから何か問題がおきたらすぐに相談すること。。。これが、ビジネスをスムーズに進めるためには大切だよ、という意味なんです。
Chris: なるほど。This term refers to three important things to keep in mind in order to have a smooth work relationship with one's superiors, and is often referred to as the fundamentals of business.
Naomi: 野菜のホウレンソウは "spinach" ですよね。だから、「ほうれんそう」というと、覚えやすいということで、言葉で遊んで、覚えやすい言葉にしているんですね。
Natsuko: そう、だから、さっきクリスさんが言っていたみたいに、すごく日本語的ですよね。で、どうしたら、この「ほうれんそう」をうまくできるかというのを書いたビジネス書なんかもあるみたいですよ。日本企業の中ではとくに大事なことなんですよね。
Chris: なるほど。アメリカではそういう言葉ないはずですけども、僕はあんまりビジネス用語得意じゃないんで…
Naomi: あ、逆にね！日本でビジネスはしたことあるけれども、アメリカでは…
Chris: あまりないですね、はい。
Naomi: なるほど。面白いですね。
Natsuko: でもなんとなく、アメリカとか欧米の会社のほうが、自分ひとりで仕事をしてリザルトまで持ってくようなイメージがあるんですけど。ね、subordinate のスタッフが毎回毎回細かく、あの、ボスに、こう、リポートとかしないですよね。
Chris: そうですね。ええ。
Naomi: 私でもピーターにいちいちリポートしていたら、もうそんなのいいから自分で決めろ！って言われて、「あ、そうなのか」と思ったことはありました。
Natsuko: えー、それはピーターだからじゃないでしょうかね？
Naomi: そうかもしれないですね。
VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Chris: Let's take a look at the vocabulary for this lesson.
Naomi: では、今回の会話の中に出てきた表現をいくつか見ていきましょう。最初の表現は、
Natsuko: 「契約にこぎつける」
Naomi: ダイアログでは、どのように使われていました？
Natsuko: 「契約にこぎつけられそう？」
Chris: “Do you think we can reach an agreement?”
Naomi: 「こぎつく」は動詞です。「漕ぐ」は「ボートを漕ぐ」(to row a boat) の「こぐ」。着くは (to arrive) ですよね。だから、「こぎつく」は「ボートをこいで、陸につく」(to row a boat and arrive at the shore) という意味なんですね。でも、だいたい可能形 (potential) になって「こぎつける」という形で使われます。
Chris: こぎつける literally means "to manage to row a boat onto the shore."
Natuko: 一生懸命、手でボートをこいで、岸につけるのは、けっこう大変ですよね。そこから、「頑張って、目的を達成する」、あとは「努力して、なんとかやり遂げる」と、そういう意味になりました。
Chris: こぎつける can also be used to mean "to manage to do something."
Naomi: これは「名詞＋にこぎつける」と使われます。例えば？
Natsuko: 「完成にこぎつける」(to manage to complete)
Chris: あと、「結婚にこぎつける」"to manage to get married"とか？
Naomi: まあ、相手が「やだやだ～」って言っていたのを頑張ってイエスと言わせたり、親がね、反対していたのを説得して結婚にこぎつけた！だったら、言えるかもしれないですね。
Natsuko: そうですね。あと今流行りの「婚活」とかもそうかもしれないですね。
Naomi: そうですね。
Natsuko: ただ、恋愛の場合で、あんまり脈がないのに、頑張っても、ただのストーカーになるので気をつけてくださいね。
Chris: 厳しいご意見、ありがとうございます。
Naomi: そして、今なつこさんが言ってくれた「脈」(pulse) を使った表現を次に紹介します。
Natsuko: 「脈がある」
Chris: "to have hope"
Naomi: 今回のダイアログでは、どのように使われていました？
Natsuko: 「十分、脈はあると思います。」
Chris: “Yes, I definitely think we can.”
Naomi: クリスさん、「脈」って英語でなんですか。
Chris: “pulse”
Naomi: 死んでいるか、生きているかをチェックするのに、脈をチェックしますよね。
でも、脈は比喩 (metaphor) として使われて、可能性があるとかないとか言うときに使われます。
「可能性がある」という意味で、「脈がある」と言います。
Natsuko: 反対に、可能性がないときは、「脈がない」って言いますね。
Naomi: はい。
Chris: So, 脈(みゃく) means "pulse" but it has the meaning of "hope." So, this phrase can be used as a medical term to mean "to have a pulse," but it can also be used to mean "to have hope." So, to use the opposite meaning of 脈, you can say 脈がない to mean "there is no hope or possibility."
Naomi: 例えば、「なつこさん、太郎くんを映画に誘ったんだけど、また、断られたの。」
Natsuko: 「ええ？この間も断られてたよね。脈ないんじゃないの。あきらめた方がいいよ。」
Naomi: 「え～。」
Chris: "Didn't he turn you down the last time, too? It's hopeless, isn't it. You should give up."…ということですね。
Natsuko: そうですね。かなりきついですね。
Naomi: サンプルセンテンスですからね。
Natsuko: そうですよ。サンプルです、サンプル。
Naomi: 次の単語は、
Natsuko: 「疎い」
Chris: "to be unfamiliar with something"
Naomi: 「よくわからない」とか「詳しくない」という意味です。
今回のダイアログでは、どのように使われていました？
Natsuko: 「担当者の方がIT関係に疎いようなんです。」
Chris: “The person in charge seems to be unfamiliar with IT related things.”
Naomi: 「～に疎い」、「noun + に疎い」という形で使われます。私は、コンピューターに疎いんですが、なつこさんとクリスさんは、どうですか。何かに疎い、ありますか？
Natsuko: 私は、コンピューターにも疎いんですけど。あの、結構ね、いま流行りのお笑い芸人とかにすごく疎いですね。
Naomi: あ、そうなんですか。
Natsuko: テレビに出てくる人が誰なんだか分かんないです！
Naomi: なるほど。
Chris: 私は、ビジネスに関することに疎いですね。
Naomi: あ、アメリカのビジネスに関することに疎い。
Chris: 実は日本でもそうですよ。
Natsuko: いやー、そんなことないですよ。
Naomi: またまたご謙遜を。
Chris: ただの風来坊ですよ。
Natsuko: 風来坊…かっこいい！
Naomi: 今回は、アドバイスをするときに便利な、「～することだ」というフレーズの使い方を勉強しましょう。
Chris: The focus of this lesson is the usage of the structure of ～することだ which is used when you give advice to someone.
Naomi: ダイアログでは、どのように使われてました？
Natsuko: 「まずは、ILLトラベルの競合相手のWebサイトをリサーチすることね。」
Chris: “To begin with, you should research ILL Travel's competitor websites.”
Naomi: 「～することだ」は、「～することが大切だ」とか「～することが大事だ」と同じ意味です。
Chris: ～することだ has the same meaning as ～することが大事だ “it's important to do ~”. Therefore, when to say that doing something is crucial to achieve a certain goal, ～することだ is often used.
Natsuko: そうですね。「目的のためには、～をすることが重要だ」というふうに使われると思いますよ。
Naomi: やっぱりアドバイスをするときに使われることが圧倒的に多いんでしょうね。
では、例文をお願いします。
Natsuko: 「日本語が話せるようになりたければ、一生懸命、JapanesePod101.com を聞くことだ。」
Chris: “If you want to be able to speak Japanese, listening to JapanesePod101 is the key.”
Natsuko: 「日本語が話せるようになる」という目的があります。その目的のために、「一生懸命JapanesePod101.comを聞くことが重要だ」と言っているわけです。
Naomi: では、もう一つ例文をお願いします。
Natsuko: 「やせたいなら、食べすぎないことだ。」
Chris: “If you want to lose weight, you should start by not overeating.”
Naomi: この例文も、「やせる」というのが目的で、そのやせるという目的のために、「食べ過ぎない」ということが大切だよと言っているんですね。
Natsuko: 「～することだ」というのは、「目的のためには～することが大切だ」とか「大事だ」という意味です。
Naomi: ただ、この表現は自分と同等の人 (person who is about same social status) とか目下の人 (person who has lower social status) にしか、使わないような気がするんですけど・・・どうでしょうね。
Natsuko: そうですよね～。これは、「文法として使わない」というよりも、日本の社会では、目上の人には直接的なアドバイスはこう、しづらい、しない・・・という、そういう文化的なことに関係するんじゃないかと思うんですけどね。
Naomi: 確かに。
Chris: そうなんですか～。So it's better to avoid ～ことだ to someone who has a higher social status than you?
Naomi: そうですね。フォーマルな場合でも、たとえば弁護士がクライアントにアドバイスをするとか、医者が患者にアドバイスをする、コンサルタントが社長にアドバイスをする・・・なんていう場面には、「～することです」は使えますよね。
Natsuko: そうですね。
Naomi: 誰かが圧倒的に知識を持っているという場合には大丈夫です。ちょっとイメージ的には「～することです」というと、自信がある感じ？すごく自信に満ち溢れてる感じですね。
Natsuko: そうそうそう、まさにそうなんですよ。だから、逆に、自分よりも知識や経験のある上司と直接１対１で話している場面では使わないほうがいいかもしれませんね。
Chris: So maybe it's better to avoid using it when talking to a superior, who's more experienced than I am?
Naomi: はい。じゃ、最後に、クリスさんに例文をお願いしましょうか。
Chris: 「仕事をうまく進めるには、きちんと報告、連絡、相談することだ。」
Natsuko: 今日のレッスンをうまくまとめていただきましたね！
