| Peter: I cannot imagine showing up to a temple and trying to find out what to do on my own. I wouldn’t know where to start! We got some feedback, we got some ideas and suggestions from you, the listeners and that’s why we’ve put together this lesson. When we’re done with today’s lesson you’re going to be able to navigate your way through a temple, what to do, and proper protocol. This is a great tool and we're going to parlay this into shrines next week. Takase san, Yoshi san, before we looked into this topic, did you know the right way to do everything? |

| Peter: Ok, so now we have one of the most difficult dialogues to date but don’t worry, we’re going to walk you through it. Please listen, try and pick up whatever you can. Again we’re going to walk you through this. With that said, please listen to today’s dialogue. Here we go. |

| Peter: Great conversation. Now, this actually uses some of the other survival phrases we’ve introduced you to up until this point. This is a really great conversation, you see how Yoshi san, who is pretending to be a foreigner, so that Takase, the native Japanese person, can actually verify that nothing was misunderstood. We even had, ‘what’s that thing’. Really great conversation. So, what we’re going to do now is, instead of giving it to you slowly we’re going to give you the translation. Then we’re going to break it down a bit and then we’re going to give you the conversation one more time. A bit of a pattern change, but there’s a lot of things in here that need some explaining, So, let’s take care of that first and then we think you’ll get a lot more hearing the conversation one, or maybe twice more at the end of the lesson. Ok, first line? |

| Peter: ‘Excuse me, could you tell me how to visit the temple?’. |
| Takase: 最初にこの水で手を洗います。 |
| Peter: ‘First, you wash your hands with this water’. |
| Takase: その後、本堂に行きます。 |
| Peter: ‘After that, you go to the Hondo’. |
| Takase: そこでお金を入れて |
| Peter: ‘Then, you put your money in there’. |
| Takase: 手を合わせてお参りします。 |
| Peter: ‘Put your hands together and pray’. |

| Peter: ‘Thank you’. What a great dialogue. Yoshi, how useful is todays conversation? |
| Yoshi: It’s really useful, you can become a monk. Anytime now. |
| Peter: Alright, now you’re pushing it! |
| Yoshi: Ok. |
| Peter: But it really will help you. Instead of watching and wondering, you can participate and it will make the experience that much better. They’ll show what’s going on and how it’s done. Alright, now let’s take a look at the first line. What do we have? |
| Yoshi: すみません。 |
| Peter: ‘Excuse me’. As always, when you want to get someone’s attention, you say? |
| Yoshi: すみません。 |
| Peter: Followed by? |
| Yoshi: お参りの仕方を教えてください。 |
| Peter: Ok, we’re going to take this sentence apart now. What do we have first? |
| Yoshi: お参り |
| Peter: Now, this is extremely polite Japanese, humble Japanese for, ‘to go’, ‘to come’, and when you go to a place like a temple you lower yourself down. And to lower yourself down, this is the word you use参り, and then we add the prefix? |
| Yoshi: お |
| Peter: To make it extremely polite. And this is followed by the particle? |
| Yoshi: の |
| Peter: To show possession. Next we have? |
| Yoshi: 仕方 |
| Peter: ‘Way of doing’. So, we have, ‘visit of way of doing’. But again we have to flip it around here so, ‘the way of visiting’, ‘the way of visiting’. And of course, we’re at the temple at the time of the conversation so, the way of visiting the temple? |
| Yoshi: を |
| Peter: This marks that phrase? |
| Yoshi: 教えて下さい。 |
| Peter: The て form of? The verb ‘to teach’? |
| Yoshi: 教える |
| Peter: We turn it into? |
| Yoshi: 教えて |
| Peter: Then add? |
| Yoshi: ください。 |
| Peter: Making it, ‘please teach’. And of course, you want to be taught so, ‘please teach me’. Now, I think the better translation is ‘please tell me’, so when we string it all together it comes out to, ‘please tell me the way of visiting the temple’. And, interpreted to, ‘please tell me what to do’, ‘what’s the proper way to visit this temple’. Then we have, Takase? |

| Peter: Again, we’re getting instructions. In the first sentence we had? 最初. First, in this sentence we have...? |

| Peter: Which is the main building of the temple. Followed by? |

| Peter: ‘To go’, in the polite form, ‘main building, go’. Again, reverse it around, ‘Go to the main building’, and then, put the whole sentence together? |

| Peter: ‘Stop right there’. Actually we have a location, ‘there’, which is? |

| Peter: Again, we have the word for ‘hand’, which is? |

| Peter: Then, what do we do with our hands? We put them together. The word for, ‘to put together’? |

| Peter: Because after we put our hands together we’re going to do another action using the て form. Finally, finish it up with? |

| Peter: We have the polite Japanese, ‘to visit.’ So, can you give us this whole sentence one time? |

| Peter: ‘Then over there, put your money in, put your hands together and pray’. Now, this basically covers everything in the conversation, what comes after this is just a back and forth exchange between the two people speaking. We follow this by? |

| Peter: So Takase san, this phrase it’s amazing because it gives you chance after chance after chance. How many times should a person use this when they come to Japan? |
| Takase: Just once. |
