Peter: Okay Sakura, what is on the menu today? Haha! |
Sakura:
Peter: |
Sakura:
Peter: |
Sakura:
Peter: |
Sakura: Fast food. |
Peter: Fast food, yes. Okay I knew you knew this topic was coming. So it was just a matter of time. |
Sakura: Yes. |
Peter: Now Japan has a lot of great food out there. |
Sakura: Yes. |
Peter: But fast food is good food too. |
Sakura: It’s popular, it’s very popular in Japan. |
Peter: Can we just get a new sponsor? How did that get into the dialogue? Yes actually you might be seeing a fast food sponsor pop up on the page because of that last line but yeah Sakura, please continue. |
Sakura: Um oh yes. It’s very popular in Japan, the fast food. |
Peter: Yeah, recently, very popular. Inside the fast food, there are many different things but today we are going to stick to the big shots, the big guys in the industry. So can you give us the word for fast food one more time? |
Sakura:
Peter: Break it down. |
Sakura:
Peter: And one time fast. |
Sakura:
Peter: Okay now when we say fast food, who are the heavyweights? Ding, ding, ding! |
Sakura: Okay first is マクドナルド |
Peter: |
Sakura: McDonalds. |
Peter: McDonalds. |
Sakura: McDonalds |
Peter: Break it down. |
Sakura:
Peter: And one time fast. |
Sakura:
Peter: Sakura…We can’t say that word. Is there an easier way, what’s going on? |
Sakura: Okay short one is マック |
Peter: Ah that’s why you are my head win. |
Sakura: It’s really short マック |
Peter: Break it down. |
Sakura: マック |
Peter: And one time fast. |
Sakura: マック |
Peter: Okay. Notice that you hold the K in there. |
Sakura: Yes. |
Peter: Okay one more time. |
Sakura: マック |
Peter: Ah this is very, very bite size. |
Sakura: Yes. |
Peter: Very nice. |
Sakura: And I think in Kansai region, they say マクド I am not sure of the intonation sorry. It might be like マクド or you know slight changes. Kansai region use the word マクド |
Peter: Break it down. |
Sakura:
Peter: And one time fast. |
Sakura:
Peter: Okay. |
Sakura: Right. |
Peter: Very, very easy to pronounce. I like these words a lot. |
Sakura: Yes. |
Peter: Okay next we have. |
Sakura:
Peter: Blast for me! Sakura, this is not fast food. This is 4-star fine dining. |
Sakura: Yes. Actually it’s very high quality, isn’t it… |
Peter: Yes. |
Sakura: But a bit expensive as well. So… |
Peter: Yes. |
Sakura: And you have to wait there a little bit to get the food. So it’s not as fast but the food is good. So it’s worth trying. |
Peter: Yes. This is our strong recommendation because it’s a Japanese burger chain, right? |
Sakura: Yes. |
Peter: What was the name again? |
Sakura:
Peter: Break it down. |
Sakura:
Peter: And one time fast. |
Sakura:
Peter: Yes. Okay it’s fast food, I admit. But it’s very good fast food. |
Sakura: Yes. |
Peter: Okay and also I was talking about Yunis the other day and we wanted to make sure that people know that. Yeah, the French fries at Mosberger are not worth eating. |
Sakura: Ahh! So like you prefer |
Peter: Yes. How do we say French fry? |
Sakura:
Peter: One more time. |
Sakura:
Peter: Break it down. |
Sakura:
Peter: And one time fast. |
Sakura:
Peter: Yes. The word for French fry is potato taken like that. We will get into the word for potato on a different day but…Okay next we have? |
Sakura:
Peter: And this is? |
Sakura: Kentucky fried chicken. |
Peter: KFC yes. Break it down. |
Sakura:
Peter: And one time fast. |
Sakura:
Peter: So Kentucky is short for Kentucky Fried Chicken. |
Sakura: Yes. |
Peter: They just use the first word. |
Sakura: Right. I used ケンタ but I am not sure if it’s common. So I better not say, introduce it here. |
Peter: Maybe we can have some field work. Please ask your friends, ask your friends if ケンタ is okay. |
Sakura: Right. |
Peter: And let us know. Okay next we have. |
Sakura:
Peter: And this is |
Sakura: Freshness burger. |
Peter: Another Japanese chain. |
Sakura: Yes. |
Peter: Okay. Can you break it down for us? |
Sakura:
Peter: Wow and one time fast. |
Sakura:
Peter: Now Sakura I noticed that Japanese fast food burger chains, they seem to like the word burger. |
Sakura: Yes yeah |
Peter: バーガ… One more time? |
Sakura:
Peter:
Sakura: No R sound there, just バーガー |
Peter: Yes
Sakura: Yeah. Hard it’s still… |
Peter: Yeah it’s quite difficult. |
Sakura: So it’s really easy but when you are used to saying burger you know… |
Peter: Oh yeah. |
Sakura: So drop the R sound
Now I got it. Thank you, that’s a nice tip. |
Sakura: Really? |
Peter: Yeah. |
Sakura: Ohh. |
Peter: You are that good at teaching Sakura. Thank you. You don’t even know you are teaching but you are doing such a great job. |
Sakura: Oh thank you. |
Peter: Don’t get too excited. |
Sakura: I am not excited at all. Anyway, next. Next? |
Peter: Okay next we have |
Sakura:
Peter: Okay and this is? |
Sakura: Wendy’s. |
Peter: Yeah, break it down. |
Sakura:
Peter: And one time fast. |
Sakura:
Peter: Okay. Next. |
Sakura:
Peter: And what’s this? |
Sakura: First Kitchen. |
Peter: First Kitchen. I guess meaning, the best first place kitchen like that nuance. |
Sakura: Um I’d say so. Japanese… |
Peter: They should have gone to Erklaren. |
Sakura: First Kitchen.
Peter: Okay. So we gave you – we gave you six chains and now these six chains, three are American and three are Japanese. We have McDonalds, KFC and Wendy’s. |
Sakura: I didn’t know Wendy’s was not Japanese. I thought it was ジャパニーズ |
Peter: No. Sorry Sakura. |
Sakura: Okay. |
Peter: Now there are a few other things. When I went to Okinawa, I went to a fast food place called A&W and apparently it’s American but I’d never had it in the US. So the first time I had it was actually in Japan. |
Sakura: Japan. |
Peter: And also Blue Seal ice cream. |
Sakura: Yes I know it’s Okinawa, isn’t it? |
Peter: Yeah it’s very, very good. Now I heard it was originally American but I don’t know if they still have it in America but it’s flourishing in Okinawa. So I think it might only be left in Japan. I am not sure. We have to look into that. |
Sakura: Oh yeah. So one of the chains in センター街 in 渋谷 |
Peter: Really? |
Sakura: But I think it’s gone now. Yeah but I did see it once definitely. |
Peter: Yeah no they do it quite well like… |
Sakura: Really… |
Peter: In Okinawa, they do very, very well and it’s very good but so the reason we bring this up is, we know that there are so many chains…. |
Sakura: Yes. |
Peter: Fast food chains and restaurants out there. So what we want to hear from you, the listeners, are there any local chains in your area that we missed? Now we are going to keep it to burgershops... |
Sakura: Yes. |
Peter: And kind of fast food… |
Japanese one, they have like Onigiri places as we all, recently so... |
Peter: Yeah. So we want to keep it kind of like the western version of fast food because again in another lesson, we will cover different types of fast food curry and things like this. |
Sakura: Yes, yes. |
Peter: So we are going to – that’s why we are trying to keep it to like a bread-based, a bread-based…bread-based fast food. |
Sakura: Actually the one burger you might like to try Mosburger is the ライスバーガー right? |
Peter: Oh yes. |
Sakura: Yes. They have ライスバーガー and it’s I think more specific, モス style. |
Peter: Yeah it’s instead of the bread, they have the rice. |
Sakura: Yes. |
Peter: Okay Sakura, so when you walk into a fast food restaurant, what do they say? |
Sakura: |
Peter: Yep standard. This is what you are going to get wherever you go. One more time. |
Sakura:
Peter: Okay. Now you go up to the counter… |
Sakura: Yes. |
Peter: And it’s fast food. So everything is moving fast. |
Sakura: Yes. |
Peter: Speaking fast, background is fast. Lots of things written in Japanese. |
Sakura: Yes. |
Peter: So what you might want to do is go with the ace in the hole which is |
Sakura: |
Peter: Okay |
Sakura: |
Peter: Okay and break it down. |
Peter: And this is |
Sakura: English menu please. |
Peter: Yes, English menu please. |
Sakura: Yes. |
Peter: Okay. What’s the word for menu? |
Sakura:
Peter: Break it down. |
Sakura:
Peter: And one time fast. |
Sakura:
Peter: Okay. So this could be your old standby but come on, you are in Japan. You wanted adventure right? |
Sakura: Right. |
Peter: Who knows what you are going to get. |
Sakura: Yes that’s right. |
Peter: So we don’t want to go with the English. We want to go with the Japanese. So you can point and you can say |
Sakura: |
Peter: Or |
Sakura: |
Peter: Yes these are two phrases we covered in the very first one. So these are the two phrases you can use for ordering. |
Sakura: Yes, yes. |
Peter: But before you order, there is a question they might ask. |
Sakura: Right, right, right. |
Peter: The dreaded question. What’s that question? |
Sakura:
Peter: Sakura, what is this? |
Sakura: Ah are you eating here? |
Peter: Yeah. |
Sakura: Yeah. |
Peter: Are you eating here? Can you give us the phrase one more time? |
Sakura: |
Peter: Okay |
Sakura: |
Peter: Okay let’s break it into two parts. Give us the first part. |
Sakura:
Peter: Okay break it down. |
Sakura:
Peter: And one time fast. |
Sakura:
Peter: And this is inside. |
Sakura: Right. |
Peter: The restaurant. |
Sakura: Right. |
Peter: And we have next? |
Sakura: |
Peter: Break it down. |
Sakura: |
Peter: And one time fast. |
Sakura: |
Peter: Okay and this is just the word to eat in a very, very polite way to say it. |
Sakura: Yes. |
Peter: Dressed up in a really nice tux. |
Sakura: Right. |
Peter: Okay. So all they are saying is, are you going to eat inside the store. |
Sakura: Right and ですか is question. |
Peter: Yeah that’s it, don’t be fooled. |
Sakura: So if you are going to eat there, you just say はい |
Peter: Yes. That’s it. |
Sakura: Right はい |
Peter: So let’s just try. I’ll come into the store. |
Peter: |
Sakura: Make sure she says that in that 店内でお召し上がりですか? yes but usually that’s the first question. |
Peter: Yes so yes, this question might be a little hard to pick up and maybe you won’t get it. So what you can do is you can reverse, turn the tables. What you can do is you can say first. |
Sakura: Yes, yes that’s a good idea. |
Peter: Yeah. So when you go up to the counter for example
Peter: So even if you didn’t understand the question, you can say 店内で the word Sakura just introduced to us, just use that phrase. |
Sakura: Umm… |
Peter: So even if you go in and she is talking about the special of the day, you can just say
Sakura: Right yeah. |
Peter: Or you can say |
Sakura:
Peter: Break it down. |
Sakura:
Peter: And one time fast. |
Sakura:
Peter: Or to go, recently, the Japanese they use |
Sakura:
Peter: Break it down. |
Sakura:
Peter: And one time fast. |
Sakura:
Peter: Yeah, take it out. Okay so very, very similar to the English word, take out. So if you went in and you said, take out, I think they would have no problem understanding that. |
Sakura: Right. |
Peter: Now there is another word for takeout which is |
Sakura:
Peter: Break it down. |
Sakura:
Peter: And one time fast. |
Sakura:
Peter: Okay. You can use either one of these words. To tell the store worker where you want to eat and what you want to do. You want to eat in the store or you want to eat out. |
Sakura: Right. |
Peter: Okay. Oh, oh Sakura. We are running short on time. |
Sakura: Oh oh so… |
Peter: So we are going to have to take it. |
Sakura: Yes. We have to cover the ordering in the next lesson. |
Peter: The next lesson. So we are going to have to cover this in the next lesson. |
Sakura: Yes. |
Peter: Sorry to cut you up in the middle of the lesson but… |
Sakura: |
Peter: We are running out of time but what we would like to do is show you the first part just how to tell the person where you want to eat. |
Sakura: Yes. |
Peter: Okay? |
Sakura: Yes. |
Peter: So you come into the store. This is the case where I want to eat at the store, okay. Here we go! |
Now if we wanted to go, we can say |
Sakura: Right. |
Peter: Okay. Now that you know where you want to eat your food, next week we are going to work on getting the food. I feel so bad if someone – this is the last one they hear before they go. |
Sakura: I am sorry. |
Peter: Before they come to Japan. |
Sakura: Yeah. |
Outro
|
Peter: We will see. Okay so that’s going to do it for today. |
Sakura: |
Peter: See you tomorrow. |
