When 4, 7 and 9 are in one's place, you can use either よん (yon) or し (shi), なな (nana) or しち (shichi) and きゅう (kyu) or く (ku) respectively. However, when they are in ten's place or above, you always have to use the first ones for each (よん, なな and きゅう). For example, you can read 17 as じゅうなな (ju nana) or じゅうしち (ju shichi), but 70 is only ななじゅう (nana ju).

For 0, you can use either one😉

The counting いち、に、さん、し、ご、ろく、しち、はち、く or きゅう、じゅう are all on-readings of their kanji. Since し means death and く means suffering, it is said that we started avoiding using these two. しち simply just sounds similar to いち, so we prefer using なな to not get confused😇

For the people asking, I got this in one of their videos, you should use 0 for zero, yon for 3, nana for 7 and with 9 you should use kyū. I’m 99.4% sure of this, but I could be wrong. I found this lesson fun and I probably will rewatch it a few times so I can get used to the numbers. Thank you japanesepod101.com! No I am not a bot 😎👍

Hi. What's the diference betwen zero and rei, yon or shi, or shichi and nana, etc? Why there are two ways to pronounce?
