When 4, 7 and 9 are in one's place, you can use either ใใ (yon) or ใ (shi), ใชใช (nana) or ใใก (shichi) and ใใ ใ (kyu) or ใ (ku) respectively. However, when they are in ten's place or above, you always have to use the first ones for each (ใใ, ใชใช and ใใ ใ). For example, you can read 17 as ใใ ใใชใช (ju nana) or ใใ ใใใก (ju shichi), but 70 is only ใชใชใใ ใ (nana ju).
For 0, you can use either one๐
The counting ใใกใใซใใใใใใใใใใใใใกใใฏใกใใ or ใใ ใใใใ ใ are all on-readings of their kanji. Since ใ means death and ใ means suffering, it is said that we started avoiding using these two. ใใก simply just sounds similar to ใใก, so we prefer using ใชใช to not get confused๐
Please let us know if you have any questions :)
Sincerely
Ryoma

For the people asking, I got this in one of their videos, you should use 0 for zero, yon for 3, nana for 7 and with 9 you should use kyลซ. Iโm 99.4% sure of this, but I could be wrong. I found this lesson fun and I probably will rewatch it a few times so I can get used to the numbers. Thank you japanesepod101.com! No I am not a bot ๐๐
Hi. What's the diference betwen zero and rei, yon or shi, or shichi and nana, etc? Why there are two ways to pronounce?
Loved this lesson it as really helpful but for the few that had two different ways of saying them what should we say?
that was very helpful. Thanks
0, 4,7 and 9 have two ways to say them, when should we use what please ?
This is more my speed..Good lesson for me!
