Hi, everybody! I’m Risa from JapanesePod101.com. |
Do you know how to say “Thank you” in Japanese? In this lesson, you'll learn three different ways to say "thank you" and how to respond. |
Let’s start with the easiest one. |
ありがとう。 |
[slowly] ありがとう。 |
This means “thank you.” |
If you want to be more formal, there is a different phrase you should use. |
どうもありがとうございます。 |
[slowly] どうもありがとうございます。 |
It means “thank you very much.” |
To show you deeply appreciate someone or something, make sure to bow a bit or smile. That's the best way to show the highest level of gratitude. |
To sound like a pro, you can add why you're thankful. For example, 来ていただいて、どうもありがとうございます。 |
“Thank you very much for coming.” |
What about between friends? Here's how to say it. |
どうも。 |
[slowly] どうも。 |
It means “Thank you.” |
Now you know 3 different ways say "thank you" in Japanese! But how do you respond if someone thanks you? |
If someone thanks you in Japanese, simply say いいえ、いいえ。It means "Not at all." |
Let's wrap up this lesson by recapping what we've learned. Listen to the expression and repeat after me. |
“Thank you.” |

Don't be surprised if an older person uses informal language toward you, even if you don't know each other. Age plays a big role in Japan, so sometimes older people will use the informal version of "thank you" to show their appreciation. |
You just learned how to say “thank you” in three different ways and how to respond in Japanese. |
