Naomi: ティッシュタイム?(Tisshu taimu?)
Peter: Tissue Time.
Naomi: ティッシュの時間ですよ〜!(Tisshu no jikan desu yō!)
Peter: Okay, Naomi-sensei, can you see the picture? この写真見えますか。(Kono shashin miemasu ka.)
Naomi: はい、見えます。(Hai, miemasu.)
Peter: どうぞ、どうなってるか教えてください。(Dōzo, dō natte ru ka oshiete kudasai.) So please tell us what’s going on.
Naomi: A man is handing out tissues.
Peter: あ、すみません。日本語でお願いします。(A, sumimasen. Nihon-go de onegai shimasu.)
Naomi: あ、ごめんなさい。男の人が、ティッシュを配ってます。(A, gomen nasai. Otoko no hito ga, tisshu o kubatte masu.)
Peter: So, the man is handing out tissues?
Naomi: そ、それ、言ったじゃん。(So, sore, itta jan.)
Yuichi: それ、おんなじ。(Sore, onnaji.)

Peter: So… あの、理由がありました。(Ano, riyū ga arimashita.) There’s a reason I said it again. だって、もうちょっとストーリーみたいなこと想像してほしかったんですけど。(Datte, mō chotto sutōrī mitai na koto sōzō shite hoshikatta n desu kedo.) I just want you to imagine a little more, but 大丈夫です (daijōbu desu). ゆういちさん、お願いします。(Yūichi-san, onegai shimasu.)
Yuichi: そうですね…。ま、この女の人がマスクをしているので、ティッシュが必要なんだと思います。(Sō desu ne… Ma, kono onna no hito ga masuku o shite iru node, tisshu ga hitsuyō nan da to omoimasu.)
Peter: So, she’s wearing a mask, so she needs some tissues because…
Yuichi: 多分、花粉症なんじゃないですかね。(Tabun, kafunshō nan ja nai desu ka ne.)
Naomi: Hay fever?
Peter: Yeah, she has hay fever? うーん、どうでしょうね。風邪…じゃないでしょうか。(Ūn, dō deshō ne. Kaze… ja nai deshō ka.) I think it’s- she has a cold.
Yuichi: うん、そうかもしれないですね。(Un, sō kamo shirenai desu ne.)
Naomi: でも、すごいね。(Demo, sugoi ne.) Leopard shirt. Leopard-patterned shirt.
Peter: 日本語で何と言いますか。(Nihon-go de nan to iimasu ka.)
Naomi: ヒョウ柄。(Hyōgara.)

Naomi:「ヒョウ」が leopard. (“Hyō” ga “reopard.”)
Peter: Not cheetah? Or hyena?

Peter: What’s hyena?
Naomi: ハイエナ。(Haiena.)

Peter: ハイエナ (haiena), hyena. ヒョウ (hyō), leopard.
Naomi: Leopard. ヒョウ柄。(Hyōgara.)

Naomi:「柄」が pattern。ヒョウ柄のシャツと、何?(“Gara” ga “pattern.” Hyōgara no shatsu to, nani?) Zebra, is that a zebra or giraffe? Giraffe-patterned bag.
Yuichi: Zebra.
Naomi: What a combination.
Peter: We’ll. We’re gonna find out what’s going on here. Now, a couple of points here. Usually, on the streets, you can find somebody handing out tissues and usually in front of a station.
Yuichi: Yeah, especially big stations. There are so many people distributing tissues.
Peter: Which is quite nice ‘cause, you know, they do come in handy and they’re done for advertisement purposes. The second interesting thing about the street is right down the middle, there is, kind of stripe and it’s perforated. So, you can actually feel your way. Now, this is for blind people.
Naomi: あ〜。あ、そうそうそうそう。(Ā. A, sō sō sō sō.)
Yuichi: 普通は黄色ですよね。(Futsū wa kiiro desu yo ne.)
Peter: It’s usually yellow and if a blind person or somebody who has trouble seeing puts their seeing stick on the ground, they can find this line. By following this line, it will lead them straight down the street and help them get around.
Naomi: アメリカはないの?(Amerika wa nai no?)
Peter: ないですね。これ、本当にすばらしいです。(Nai desu ne. Kore, hontō ni subarashii desu.) This is really nice.
Naomi: これ、すごいいい〜。いいシステムですよね。(Kore, sugoi iī. Ii shisutemu desu yo ne.)
Yuichi: Yeah, on the train station or… 駅にもあります。(Eki ni mo arimasu.)
Peter: Hmm.
Naomi: So, we are not supposed to walk on that yellow line.
Peter: But you see she’s like standing right on it.
Naomi: そうね。(Sō ne.)
Peter: はい。(Hai.)
Naomi: じゃあ、ストーリー。(Jā, sutōrī.)
Peter: お願いします。(Onegai shimasu.)
DIALOGUE
A: メンズカットサロン「サブロー」です。よろしくお願いしま~す。 (Menzu katto saron “Saburō” desu. Yoroshiku onegai shimāsu.)
B: ティッシュ、ください。 (Tisshu, kudasai.)

(I wanna give them to men, but...ah, whatever) Here you are.

How convenient! I forgot my tissues and was in need of some.

POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Naomi: ティッシュを配るアルバイトって、時給いいんですよ。知ってました?(Tisshu o kubaru arubaito tte, jikyū ii n desu yo. Shitte mashita?) Distributing tissues. Distributing tissues on the street is a high-salary job.
Peter: Is a high-paying job?
Naomi: High-paying job, yes.
Peter: うそでしょう?(Uso deshō?)
Naomi: 本当、本当。千円ぐらい、出るらしいですよ。(Hontō, hontō. Sen-en gurai, deru rashii desu yo.)
Peter: いや、違います!(Iya, chigaimasu!)
Naomi: It depends on your company, but yeah, usually.
Peter: Yeah. やったことありますか。(Yatta koto arimasu ka.) Have you done it?
Naomi: ううん、ない。でも、求人をインターネットでチェックしました。(Ūn, nai. Demo, kyūjin o intānetto de chekku shimashita.)
Peter: そうですね。一応、おいしい給料書いてありますけれども。(Sō desu ne. Ichiō, oishii kyūryō kaite arimasu keredomo.) It’s like a competitive salary is listed. でも、実は違います。(Demo, jitsu wa chigaimasu.) But in reality, it’s different.
Naomi: 本当?(Hontō?)
Peter: 本当です。それ、計算しているんだと思いますよ。(Hontō desu. Sore, keisan shite iru n da to omoimasu yo.) Like it’s based on a calculation. Basically, they give you boxes.
Naomi: Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Peter: And they calculate that it will take you this amount of time to get rid of your boxes. でも、実際は違います。(Demo, jissai wa chigaimasu.)
Naomi: なんで知ってるの、ピーター?(Nande shitte ru no, Pītā?)
Yuichi: So, have you done it?
Peter: Yeah.
Yuichi: やったことは?(Yatta koto wa?)
Peter: やったことないんですけど。(Yatta koto nai n desu kedo.)
Yuichi: ああ、じゃあそれは分かりませんよ。(Ā, jā sore wa wakarimasen yo.) So you don’t know.
Peter: なぜかと言うと。(Naze ka to iu to.) Why do I know? Because, I asked them.
Yuichi: おー。あ、ティッシュ配っている人に聞いたんですね。(Ō. A, tisshu kubatte iru hito ni kiita n desu ne.)
Peter: はい。はい。(Hai, hai.)
Yuichi: So, you asked the people distributing the tissues? へー。で?(Hē. De?)
Peter: And yeah. 特に、この人は普通配ってる人みたいなんですけど。 (Toku ni, kono hito wa futsū kubatte ru hito mitai nan desu kedo.) This guy looks like a normal person handing out tissues, but 怪しい人もいます (ayashii hito mo imasu). There are like a bunch of other guys who only give them out to the women.
Naomi: Yeah.
Peter: And they’re trying to get them to sign up to go to some kind of 水商売 (mizushōbai).
Naomi: Yeah.
Peter: To work in some kind of, like red light district.
Naomi: ホステス、バー。(Hosutesu, bā.)
Peter: Yeah. So, those guys had it even worse, because there’s somebody watching them.
Yuichi: あ〜。(Ā.)
Naomi: う〜ん。(Ūn.)
Peter: 普段は、なんか管理者がいます。見張ってます。(Fudan wa, nanka kanrisha ga imasu. Mihatte masu.)
Naomi: なるほど。へー。(Naruhodo. Hē.)
Peter: だって。(Datte.) You can just grab the box and damp it somewhere. I’m done. So, no, they have somebody watching, so… 実は大変な仕事です。(Jitsu wa taihen na shigoto desu.)
Naomi: なるほどね。(Naruhodo ne.)
Peter: でも、どうしましょう。あの、私が一つの意見で、なおみ先生も一つの意見で。 (Demo, dō shimashō. Ano, watashi ga hitotsu no iken de, Naomi-sensei mo hitotsu no iken de.) So, I have one opinion. Naomi has a different opinion. Maybe we should send Yuichi into the field, as a field work.
Yuichi: Uh, delivering tissue?
Peter: Yeah.
Yuichi: Oh, yeah, okay.
Naomi: JapanesePod101.com って書いたティッシュを配る。(“JapanesePod101.com” tte kaita tisshu o kubaru.)
Peter: 配ればいいです。(Kubareba ii desu.)
Yuichi: Okay at the Akasaka-Mitsuke Station.
Naomi: ゆういちくんの写真とか入れて。(Yūichi-kun no shashin toka irete.)
Yuichi: で、それであの、段ボールの箱を捨てて、オフィスに帰ってきます。(De, sorede ano, danbōru no hako o sutete, ofisu ni kaette kimasu.) I’ll damp the box away and go back to the office.
Naomi: どうでしょう、この態度。(Dō deshō, kono taido.) What an- what an attitude.
Peter: まあ、若い人みんなそういうもんですね。(Mā, wakai hito minna sō iu mon desu ne.)
Naomi: じゃ、単語に行きましょう。(Ja, tango ni ikimashō.)
Peter: あと、もう一つなんですが…。(Ato, mō hitotsu nan desu ga…)
Naomi: まだあるの?(Mada aru no?)
Peter: まだあります。なおみ先生が言ってることと、何か近いことを思いました。(Mada arimasu. Naomi-sensei ga itte ru koto to, nani ka chikai koto o omoimashita.) Like I thought about something similar to what you were saying, like… もし私がゆういちさんみたいな独身だったら、自分の写真、ティッシュ入れて。あと名刺入れて、駅で配ればいいんじゃないかな、と思いました。(Moshi watashi ga Yūichi-san mitai na dokushin dattara, jibun no shashin, tisshu irete. Ato meishi irete, eki de kubareba ii n ja nai ka na, to omoimashita.) Like I thought, like it’d be a good way to meet girls, you put your picture.
Naomi: You’ll get a bunch of junk mails. おめでとうございます!(Omedetō gozaimasu!)
Peter: Well not for me, but, like I thought it would be good for Yuichi. そうじゃん。どう?もしティッシュもらったら。 (Sō jan. Dō? Moshi tisshu morattara.) What if Yuichi gave you a tissue with his picture and business card?
Naomi: 怪しいよね。(Ayashii yo ne.)
Yuichi: 怪しい、怪しい。気持ち悪い。(Ayashii, ayashii. Kimochi warui.) Gross.
Naomi: そん...、そんなことは言ってない。ま、電話するかもね。(Son…, sonna koto wa itte nai. Ma, denwa suru kamo ne.)
Peter: でしょ?(Desho?)
Yuichi: しない、しない。(Shinai, shinai.)

Peter: Okay, let’s take a closer look at some of the words and phrases used in today’s conversation. なおみ先生、お願いします。(Naomi-sensei, onegai shimasu.)
Naomi: はい。今日は、verb conjugation をチェックしたいと思います。それから、漢字も少し、チェックしたいと思います。(Hai. Kyō wa, “verb conjugation” o chekku shitai to omoimasu. Sorekara, kanji mo sukoshi, chekku shitai to omoimasu.)
Peter: So, we’re gonna take a look at verb conjugation and kanji.
Naomi: ゆういちさん、どうぞ。(Yūichi-san, dōzo.)
Yuichi: So, we’re gonna first look at the word 配る (kubaru).
Peter: “To distribute, to deliver.” This is a Class 1 Verb. So, the dictionary form is…
Yuichi: 配る (kubaru)
Peter: The non-past. Remember, Japanese only has past and non-past. The non-past plain negative.
Yuichi: 配らない (kubaranai)
Peter: The masu-form.
Yuichi: 配ります (kubarimasu)
Peter: The dictionary form, again.

Peter: The imperative form.
Yuichi: 配れ (kubare)

Naomi: And the -te form is?
Yuichi:「配って」ですね。(“Kubatte” desu ne.)
Peter: So, let’s just go to another one, 困る (komaru) “to be troubled” as it’s also a Class 1 Verb, so we can do this very easily. So, let’s first have the non-past plain negative.
Yuichi: 困らない (komaranai)
Peter: Let’s have the masu-form.
Yuichi: こば…。困ります (Koba… komarimasu)
Peter: コバル。「コバル」って何?(Kobaru. “Kobaru” tte nani?)
Yuichi: すみません。(Sumimasen.)
Peter: The imperative form.
Yuichi: 困れ (komare)
Peter: -Te form.
Yuichi: 困って (komatte)
Peter: Okay.
Naomi: そうですね。「配る」の漢字ですが。(Sō desu ne. “Kubaru” no kanji desu ga.) Please take a look at the kanji for 配る (kubaru), the first character. The left side means sake/alcohol and the right part of this kanji is the shape of a person kneeling down and waiting for sake. So, someone is distributing sake is the meaning of this kanji.
Peter: Wow! I didn’t know that.
Yuichi: Mm.
Naomi: なんですって。(Nan desu tte.)
Yuichi: That’s interesting.
Peter: Let’s take a look at another verb.
Yuichi: 忘れる (wasureru)
Peter: “To forget, to leave carelessly.”
Yuichi: これは、クラス2ですね。(Kore wa, kurasu tsū desu ne.)
Peter: Class 2 Verb. Let’s have the non-past plain negative.
Yuichi: 忘れない (wasurenai)
Peter: Let’s have the masu-form.
Yuichi: 忘れます (wasuremasu)
Peter: The dictionary form again.
Yuichi: 忘れる (wasureru)
Peter: The imperative form.
Yuichi: 忘れろ (wasurero)
Peter: “Forget it.”
Yuichi: -Te formは「忘れて」。(“-Te form” wa “wasurete.”)
Peter: Okay. Naomi-sensei, how about the kanji?
Naomi: これ、漢字よく見ると、簡単ですよね。(Kore, kanji yoku miru to, kantan desu yo ne.) If you take a look at the kanji, you can see two characters in it.
Yuichi: Mm.
Naomi: The top part is…
Yuichi: “To pass away.”
Naomi: そうですね。(Sō desu ne.) “To miss something” とか (toka), “to lose something.” And the bottom part is…
Yuichi: “Heart.”
Naomi: そうですね。(Sō desu ne.)
Peter: And also, in a Japanese context, this incorporates “mind.”
Yuichi: そうですね。(Sō desu ne.)
Naomi: なので (nanode), something slipped out of someone’s mind.
Peter: Or passed away from something’s mind.
Naomi: まあ、そうですね。(Mā, sō desu ne.)
Yuichi: はい。(Hai.)
Naomi: では、文法です。(Dewa, bunpō desu.)

Lesson focus

Naomi: Today’s grammar point is ~ていた (-te ita) as in 困っていた (komatte ita).
Peter: Which is the past progressive. Now, to look at ~ていた (-te ita), we’re gonna look first at ~ている (-te iru), which expresses the idea that an action is progressing at the present time or someone or something is keeping the state created some time ago. So, a state is continuing on. And ~ている (-te iru) is equivalent to the present progressive. Naomi-sensei, can we have an example?
Naomi: 風邪をひいている。(Kaze o hiite iru.)
Peter: So, if we translate it, “I’m catching a cold, but–
Naomi: そうですね。(Sō desu ne.)
Peter: It really represents the state that I’ve caught a cold and it’s continuing on. So, the state is continuing on. Now, ~ている (-te iru), this is the present progressive. Now, if ~ている (-te iru) becomes…
Naomi: ~ていた (-te ita)
Peter: Then we have the past progressive.
Naomi: 風邪をひいていた。(Kaze o hiite ita.)
Peter: “I had a cold.” So, the past tense of ~ている (-te iru) is ~ていた (-te ita) and in this case, the speaker is talking about a certain time in the past and talking about a time when an action was progressing or some- there was some state that was continuing. In today’s example, we had…
Yuichi: ティッシュを忘れちゃって、困っていたの。 (Tisshu o wasurechatte, komatte ita no.)
Peter: “I forgot my tissues” and “was in a bind.” “Was in a bind,” was in a bit of trouble because I forgot the tissues, but now that I have them, that situation has passed.
Naomi: そうですね。ティッシュを忘れて困っているの。(Sō desu ne. Tisshu o wasurete komatte iru no.)
Peter: So, I forgot my tissues and…
Naomi: I’m in trouble.
Peter: Yeah.
Naomi: What can I do?
Peter: Here you are, Naomi.
Naomi: あ〜、ありがとう、ピーター!「ティッシュを忘れて困っていたの」になりますね。(Ā, arigatō, Pītā! “Tisshu o wasurete komatte ita no” ni narimasu ne.)
Peter: So, that situation is resolved. Now, if I take back the tissues…
Naomi: え?(E?)
Peter: 返してください!(Kaeshite kudasai!)
Naomi: え?(E?)
Yuichi: 返せ!(Kaese!)
Peter: Yes.
Yuichi: 返せ!(Kaese!) The imperative form.
Naomi: バカヤロウ!返せ!(Bakayarō! Kaese!)
Peter: So, Naomi-sensei, I take the tissues back. 返してください。(Kaeshite kudasai.) I take the tissues back and I leave.
Naomi: And I’ll probably say to Yuichi-san. ピーターがティッシュ持って行っちゃって、困ってるの。(Pītā ga tisshu motte itchatte, komatte ru no.)
Yuichi: あー、そうですか。(Ā, sō desu ka.)
Peter: So, she’s back to the state of being in trouble.
Naomi: そうですね。そうですか、だけ?(Sō desu ne. Sō desu ka, dake?)
Yuichi: じゃあ、これあげます。(Jā, kore agemasu.)
Naomi: ありがとうございます!(Arigatō gozaimasu!)

Peter: Okay. Today’s PDF has a very nice write-up about this important point, the difference between present progressive and the past progressive in Japanese and the different states it can be. It can be an action continuing on or a state continuing on, as the Japanese doesn’t have past perfect. So, this is kind of a very important point you wanna take a look at.
