Yuichi: 神父?(Shinpu?)
Naomi: 神父も (shinpu mo), Catholic too.
Peter: Well, 牧師 (bokushi) is Protestant?
Naomi: Yeah. 牧師がProtestant。(Bokushi ga “Protestant.”) But it depends on the religion.
Peter: One of the most interesting things for me in Japan is that they have every religion.
Naomi: え?(E?)
Peter: Every religion; Buddhists, Shinto, worshipping people, Jewish, Islamic, Catholic, Protestant, Jehovah Witnesses.

Peter: 言う、言う、言うこともないです。(Iu, iu, iu koto mo nai desu.) I have nothing to say. Okay, let’s take a listen to the conversation and find out what exactly happened. はい、お願いします。(Hai, onegai shimasu.)

POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Naomi: Priestess? I don’t think 巫女さん (Miko-san) is a priestess. Priestess is like 女の神主 (onna no kannushi), right?
Peter: Yeah.
Naomi: But 巫女さん (Miko-san) is more like a female attendant at the shrine.
Peter: Yeah. Judging by how you explained it before we start it, yeah, it seems like they’re not priestesses. They’re not studying anything religious, just there for…
Naomi: Helping the priest.
Peter: For the money.
Naomi: そうですね。でも、ピーターさんは、これわからなかったんですね。(Sō desu ne. Demo, Pītā-san wa, kore wakaranakatta n desu ne.) When you first look at this picture, you were like, “Where is this? Korea.”
Peter: お互いさま!お互いさまです。(O-tagai-sama! O-tagai-sama desu.)
Naomi: でも、私はわかりますよ。(Demo, watashi wa wakarimasu yo.) It’s so obvious.
Yuichi: はい、みんなわかりますよ。はい。(Hai, minna wakarimasu yo. Hai.)
Naomi: Everyone knows.
Peter: 服でわかりますか。(Fuku de wakarimasu ka.) You know by the clothing?
Naomi &Yuichi: Yeah.
Naomi: And white top 着物 (kimono) and red 袴 (hakama). I don’t know how 袴 (hakama) should be translated, but red pants. これは、巫女さんです。(Kore wa, Miko-san desu.)
Peter: And only females.
Naomi: そうですね。巫女さんは、女です。(Sō desu ne. Miko-san wa, onna desu.) If you take a look at the kanji for 巫女さん (Miko-san), it’s quite obvious because it has kanji for women. でも、時々propheciesが出せる巫女さんがいますよね。予言できる巫女さんいますよね。(Demo, tokidoki “prophecies” ga daseru Miko-san ga imasu yo ne. Yogen dekiru Miko-san imasu yo ne.)
Peter: Really? So sometimes, they are part-time priestesses.
Naomi: No, no, no, they’re the serious one.
Peter: Okay.
Naomi: I think there are some in Okinawa and other areas.
Peter: So, a priestess that can make prophecies.
Naomi: Shamanみたいなのかな。(“Shaman” mitai na no ka na.)
Peter: Ah…
Yuichi: Mmm-mmm.
Naomi: でも、だから。(Demo, dakara.) In the PDF, you can see the kanji for 巫女 (Miko) and the first kanji, you see two people and katakana エ (e), so people are saying, エ〜 (ē) ?
Peter: A little surprise?
Naomi: Don’t you think it’s a good way to memorize the kanji?
Peter: It’s very good.
Yuichi: I think so too.
Peter: Really great, great mnemonic, エ〜 (ē)?
Naomi: People are saying, エ〜 (ē)?
Peter: All right. Check out the PDF and let us know about that. Okay, let’s check out the vocab.

VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Peter: Let’s take a closer look at some of the words and phrases in today’s lesson. Naomi-Sensei, first we have?
Naomi: 神社 (jinja)
Peter: “Shinto shrine”
Naomi: そうですね。(Sō desu ne.) There are several names for a Shinto shrine. One is 神社 (jinja) and 神宮 (jingū), 大社 (taisha). I think 神宮 (jingū) and 大社 (taisha) are usually used for higher-up shrine, like 伊勢神宮 (Ise Jingū) or 出雲大社 (Izumo Taisha). 神社 (jinja) is for like average-level 神社 (jinja).
Yuichi: Branches, branches of the head shrine.
Naomi: そうですね。(Sō desu ne.)
Peter: I didn’t know that. 勉強になりました。(Benkyō ni narimashita.)
Naomi: お守り (o-mamori)
Peter: “Good luck charm”
Yuichi: 守る (mamoru) means “to protect.” This is a noun of 守る (mamoru), お守り (o-mamori).
Naomi: There are many kinds of お守り (o-mamori) out there.
Peter: Yeah. One is for labor, one is for work, academic success, safe travel, getting around safely in your car, success, love.
Naomi: いっぱいありますね。(Ippai arimasu ne.)
Peter: Health. なおみ先生、どれ持っていますか。(Naomi-sensei, dore motte imasu ka.) Which do you have?
Naomi: Pretty much everything.
Peter: ゆういち? (Yūichi?)
Yuichi: 受験の時に、academic success お守りを買いました。(Juken no toki ni, “academic success” o-mamori o kaimashita.)
Peter: When you took the university entrance exam, you got one for doing well on the test.
Yuichi: そうです。(Sō desu.)
Naomi: で (de), it is said that it works only for a year なので (na node). If a year passes, their power will be expired.
Peter: Great business model.
Naomi: ね〜。(Nē.) You can learn from their way of business.
Peter: JapanesePod101.com only is effective for one year.
Naomi: All your knowledge will be gone after a year.
Peter: If you don’t have the subscription. So, you can get your JapanesePod101.com のお守り (no o-mamori).
Naomi: To keep your knowledge of Japanese.
Peter: Yep! They’re available in the store, so you definitely wanna get one. Okay, next we have?
Naomi: 物知り (monoshiri)
Peter: “A knowledgeable person.” すごい、この言葉初めて知ったんです。(Sugoi, kono kotoba hajimete shitta n desu.) It’s the first time I heard this word.
Naomi: そうですか。(Sō desu ka.) 物が (mono ga) “things,” 知る (shiru) means “to know.” So, 物知り (monoshiri) means 物を知っている (mono o shitte iru) “to know things” ということです (to iu koto desu). 例えば (tatoeba), I think. ナツコさんは、物知りです。(Natsuko-san wa, monoshiri desu.)
Peter: Yes, definitely. Natsuko is a knowledgeable person. ところで、物知りの反対は何ですか。(Tokorode, monoshiri no hantai wa nan desu ka.) What’s the opposite of 物知り (monoshiri)?
Yuichi:「無知」ですね。(“Muchi” desu ne.)
Peter: “Without knowledge.”
Naomi: 漢字は?(Kanji wa?)
Yuichi: 無 (mu) means “nothing,” 知 (chi) means “to know.”
Naomi: Or knowledge.
Peter: To know nothing. Not really an opposite, we kind of forced it, but…
Naomi: 無知 (muchi)
Peter: 無知な人ですね。(Muchi na hito desu ne.)
Naomi: そうそうそうそう。言えます。(Sō sō sō sō. Iemasu.)
Yuichi: そうですね。(Sō desu ne.)
Peter: Okay. Onto the grammar.

Lesson focus

Peter: Naomi-Sensei, what are we talking about today?
Naomi: って (-tte) as in あの人って (ano hito tte).
Peter: This is a colloquial topic-introducer. Now, usually, we talk about topic markers. We talk about は (wa) and then we also introduced なら (nara), which is emphasizing a bit more. って (-tte) is used in a colloquial, when you’re speaking to basically introduce a topic. なおみって、すばらしい先生ですね。(Naomi tte, subarashii sensei desu ne.)
Naomi: びっくりしました。(Bikkuri shimashita.)
Peter: Naomi, she’s a great teacher. ゆういちって、イケメンですね。(Yūichi tte, ikemen desu ne.) Like Yuichi, he’s a good-looking guy.
Naomi: ね〜、どうしちゃったんだろうね。(Nē, dō shichatta n darō ne.) Flattery will get you nowhere.
Peter: Everywhere, everywhere. 社交辞令ですね。(Shakō jirei desu ne.) As our friend Larry would say, drawing out compliments.
Naomi: 社交辞令? (Shakō jirei?) So, you’re saying that comment you just made was 社交辞令 (shakō jirei)?
Peter: Yeah.
Naomi: Oh, 社交辞令 (shakō jirei). もう一回 translation お願いします。(Mō ikkai “translation” onegai shimasu.)
Peter: Well, let’s break it apart. What do we have first?
Naomi: 社交 (shakō)
Peter: Which is?
Naomi: Socialize.
Peter: Yeah. And then?
Naomi: 辞令 (jirei), it’s not a very common word, but it means compliment.
Peter: So, you’re saying these things, you know, to kind of smooth over relationships and we do this in the States a lot, “Oh, great clothes!” You know, “Really nice.”
Naomi: But you’re not really meaning it.
Peter: Yeah, as soon as they’re gone, “Woah, where did they buy that suit?”
Naomi: それは、ニューヨークだけじゃないの?違うの?(Sore wa, Nyū yōku dake ja nai no? Chigau no?)
Peter: 違います。(Chigaimasu.) But the point was the って (-tte). I introduced the topic of なおみ先生って (Naomi-sensei tte). Okay, we’re talking about Naomi. ゆういち先生って (Yūichi-sensei tte), we’re talking about Yuichi. 日本って、最近景気がいいですね。(Nihon tte, saikin keiki ga ii desu ne.) Like Japan, recently, the economy is good.
Naomi: ピーターって…。(Pītā tte…)
Peter: どうぞ。(Dōzo.)
Yuichi: 物知りですね。(Monoshiri desu ne.)
Peter: すばらしいです。(Subarashii desu.) So Peter is knowledgeable.
Yuichi: 社交辞令でした。(Shakō jirei deshita.)
Peter: So again, but I can see that, you know, like waiting for all together and I’m talking about something and Yuichi would say あ、物知りですね。(A, monoshiri desu ne.) And then as soon as I leave, ah, 限界でした (genkai deshita), like I was at my limit listening to him, right? その感じですね。(Sono kanji desu ne.) Can we have an example?
Naomi: 春って、気持ちいいね。(Haru tte, kimochi ii ne.)
Peter: Spring is so nice, but literally, “The spring, it’s nice.”
Naomi: そうですね。ちょっと、ポーズが入りますよね。(Sō desu ne. Chotto, pōzu ga hairimasu yo ne.)
Peter: Mmm.
Yuichi: Mmm.

Outro

Peter: So, that’s gonna do it for today. Now, this is a really good lesson, some really nice informal Japanese in here. This is a perfect chance to go into the Learning Center, use the voice-recording tool along with the line-by-line. Play the line-by-line, hear the native Japanese speaker say the lines, use the voice recording tool to record your own voice, then compare them and use that tool to really work on your pronunciation. It really will do wonders. Okay, that’s gonna do it for today.
Naomi: PDFとか、Learning Centerとか、チェックしておいてください。(Pīdīefu toka, “Learning Center” toka, chekku shite oite kudasai.)
A: あの人って、何をする人だろう? (Ano hito tte, nani o suru hito darō?)
B: えっ。知らないの。巫女さんだよ。 (E. Shiranai no. Miko-san da yo.)
詳しくは知らないけど、神社で働いている人だよ。 (Kuwashiku wa shiranai kedo, jinja de
hataraite iru hito da yo.)
A: どんな仕事してるんだろうね。 (Donna shigoto shite ru n darō ne.)
B: 参拝者への対応とか、お守りをあげるとか、舞を踊るとか・・・いろいろじゃないの。 (Sanpaisha e no taiō toka, o-mamori o ageru toka, mai o odoru toka... iroiro ja nai no.)
A: さすが、マサル。物知りだなあ。 (Sasuga, Masaru. Monoshiri da nā.)
B: まあな。 (Mā na.)
