| Eric: Naomi-sensei, |
| Naomi: はい。(Hai.) |
| Eric: This is ridiculous. Lori is leaving, it’s all emotional and heartfelt and then she lost her passport. |
| Naomi: そうですね。(Sō desu ne.) Yeah she was saying パスポートがありません (pasupōto ga arimasen). Oh no! My passport is gone. |
| Eric: Right, it literally means there is no passport. You know, but it’s obvious that she is talking about herself. So you know, I don’t have my passport or I lost my passport or it’s not here, whichever one but it doesn’t necessarily mean that she lost it, right? She just can’t find it right now. |
| Naomi: はい。(Hai.) |
| Eric: But this is it, Naomi-sensei, Lori is leaving Japan. |
| Naomi: そうですね。(Sō desu ne.) |
| Eric: It was an eventful time for her, you know, with getting lost in Matsumoto. Catching the flu, getting cheated on by her boyfriend, riding a bus with samurai, at least she wasn’t bored. |
| Naomi: 良かったですね。(Yokatta desu ne.) |
| Eric: On to the vocabulary. |

| VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE |
| Eric: Let’s take a look at some of these words. What’s the first word? |
| Naomi: こちらこそ (kochirakoso) |
| Eric: Same here. You too, right back at you, right? こちらこそ (kochirakoso) is a phrase that means same here or you too and it’s used to return kind words that someone said to you. |
| Naomi: そうですね。(Sō desu ne.) I think the English same here is pretty casual right but Japanese こちらこそ (kochirakoso) can be used both formal and informal situation. |
| Eric: よろしくお願いします (yoroshiku onegai shimasu) is nice to meet you. So if somebody says よろしくお願いします (yoroshiku onegai shimasu), you can reply with |
| Naomi: こちらこそよろしくお願いします (kochirakoso yoroshiku onegai shimasu) or you can just say こちらこそ (kochirakoso). |
| Eric: All right. So what’s another phrase that we have? |
| Naomi: また会いましょう (mata aimashō) |
| Eric: Let’s meet again. |
| Naomi: また (mata) means again and 会いましょう (aimashō) means let’s meet. |
| Eric: 会いましょう (aimashō) is the volitional form of 会います (aimasu), to meet. The usage of ましょう (mashō) is covered in newbie series season 4, lesson 42 and lesson 48. So go over those lessons if you need a review and finally we have |
| Naomi: お元気で (o-genki de) |
| Eric: Take care of yourself or take care of yourselves. |
| Naomi: お (o) is honorific prefix. 元気 (genki) means healthy or well or fine. It’s a na-adjective and で (de) is a particle. |
| Eric: I just translated お元気で (o-genki de) as take care of yourself but unlike the English take care of yourself, お元気で (o-genki de) is often used when saying goodbye to someone you probably won’t see for a long time or maybe not ever again. This phrase has more of a permanent feeling to it. |
| Naomi: The original phrase was お元気でいてください (o-genki de ite kudasai). |
| Eric: Be in good health or stay healthy. |
| Naomi: But いてください (ite kudasai) please stay or please be is omitted. |
| 次は、文法です。(Tsugi wa, bunpō desu.) |
| Eric: On to the grammar. |
Lesson focus |

| Eric: So as you likely noticed, the focus of this lesson is farewell phrases. When saying farewell, you probably want to reminisce about the past. So let’s review the past tense. |
| Naomi: そうですね。復習しましょう。(Sō desu ne. Fukushū shimashō.) |
| Eric: To make a verb past tense, take the masu-stem of the verb and replace with ました (mashita). |
| Naomi: 行きます (ikimasu) |
| Eric: To go. |
| Naomi: Becomes 行きました (ikimashita). |
| Eric: Went. |
| Naomi: お世話になります (o-sewa ni narimasu) |
| Eric: Please take good care of me. |
| Naomi: Becomes お世話になりました (o-sewa ni narimashita). |
| Eric: You took care of me and for i-adjectives, take away the final い (i) and add かったです (katta desu). |
| Naomi: 楽しいです (tanoshii desu) becomes 楽しかったです (tanoshikatta desu). |
| Eric: It was fun. In the dialogue, what did we have? |
| Naomi: 楽しかったです。(Tanoshikatta desu.) |
| Eric: It was fun, I had fun. Yeah, it’s a really useful phrase to let someone know that you’ve enjoyed yourself. |
| Naomi: そうですね。(Sō desu ne.) |
| Eric: What else do we have in the dialogue? |
| Naomi: 色々お世話になりました。(Iroiro o-sewa ni narimashita.) |
| Eric: Thank you for everything. |
| Naomi: 色々 (iroiro) means various. |
| Eric: Right. |
| Naomi: お世話になりました (o-sewa ni narimashita), I was taking care of or you took care of me. |
| Eric: So literally you took care of me in many ways. |
| Naomi: そうですね。(Sō desu ne.) |
| Eric: It’s equivalent to the English, thank you for everything. This phrase is used towards people who have done a lot for you or have otherwise supported you in some way. By using this phrase, you can express gratitude towards everything that you have done. So let’s practice , Naomi-sensei. |
| Naomi: はい。(Hai.) |
| Eric: You are at the airport with your host family and it’s boarding time but before you get on the plane, you want to say thanks for everything. |
| Naomi: お世話になりました。(O-sewa ni narimashita.) |
| Eric: I had a lot of fun. |
| Naomi: とても楽しかったです。(Totemo tanoshikatta desu.) |
| Eric: And then your host mother says, we had a great time too. |
| Naomi: こちらこそ。(Kochirakoso.) |
| Eric: Email us. |
| Naomi: メールくださいね。(Mēru kudasai ne.) |
| Eric: And of course, in response, you can say |
| Naomi: はい。メールします。また会いましょう。お元気で。(Hai. Mēru shimasu. Mata aimashō. O-genki de.) |
