POST CONVERSATION BANTER |
Naomi: So what did you think? |
Eric: Right now, I am just confused. |
Naomi: なんで?(Nande?) |
Eric: Who is telling the truth here? |
Naomi: It’s quite obvious, right? |
Eric: Okay. Look, for all you listeners, if you started listening here, I suggest you go back to around Episode 33, 34 to get the full story, all right? Come back and let me know what you think. So Lori told Shizuka that Ryu is her boyfriend. |
Naomi: はい。(Hai.) |
Eric: But Ryu went and asked Shizuka on a date as if nothing, right? And Shizuka, torn by his two-facedness, called him out in the last episode. |
Naomi: 嘘つき!(Usotsuki!) |
Eric: Liar! And now we find out that according to Ryu at least, Lori and him aren’t even going out. So what, Lori was just making stuff up or she forgot to mention that he was her imaginary boyfriend? |
Naomi: I don’t think Ryu was her imaginary boyfriend because Ryu was quite upset, right? He was saying... 嘘です。全部嘘です!(Uso desu. Zenbu uso desu!) |
Eric: Wait, so you think Ryu had the audacity to just lie in front of his own girlfriend? |
Naomi: そうそうそうそう。(Sō sō sō sō.) |
Eric: Sky. How low can he go? When you think he has hit rock bottom, he digs himself a little deeper. So on to the vocabulary. |
Naomi: 次は、単語です。(Tsugi wa, tango desu.) |
VOCAB LIST |
Eric: What’s the first word? |
Naomi: どうして (dōshite) |
Eric: Why, for what reason. |
Naomi: (slow) どうして (dōshite) (natural speed) どうして (dōshite) |
Eric: The next word is |
Naomi: 全部 (zenbu) |
Eric: Everything. |
Naomi: (slow) ぜんぶ (zenbu) (natural speed) 全部 (zenbu) |
Eric: The next word is |
Naomi: 帰ります (kaerimasu) |
Eric: To go back. |
Naomi: (slow) かえります (kaerimasu) (natural speed) 帰ります (kaerimasu) |
Eric: The next word is |
Naomi: さようなら (sayōnara) |
Eric: Goodbye. |
Naomi: (slow) さようなら (sayōnara) (natural speed) さようなら (sayōnara) |
Eric: And next we have a phrase. |
Naomi: お世話になりました (o-sewa ni narimashita) |
Eric: Thank you for your kindness, hospitality. |
Naomi: (slow) おせわになりました (o-sewa ni narimashita) (natural speed) お世話になりました (o-sewa ni narimashita) |
Eric: And last we have |
Naomi: 女 (onna) |
Eric: Woman. |
Naomi: (slow) おんな (onna) (natural speed) 女 (onna) |
VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE |
Eric: So what was that last word you just said, Naomi-sensei? |
Naomi: 女 (onna) |
Eric: Woman or women. |
Naomi: そうですね。(Sō desu ne.) The opposite word is 男 (otoko). |
Eric: Man or men. What did Ryu say in the dialogue? |
Naomi: ロリーは僕の彼女じゃないです。女友達です。(Rorī wa boku no kanojo ja nai desu. Onna tomodachi desu.) |
Eric: Free audacity. Lori is not my girlfriend. She is just my female friend who I happen to be going out with but I am lying right now. So as we learned in lesson 38, 女友達 (onna tomodachi) is female friend, right? |
Naomi: はい。(Hai.) |
Eric: What’s the next phrase? |
Naomi: 帰りましょう (kaerimashō) |
Eric: Let’s go home and as we learned in lesson 42, ましょう (mashō) or ましょうか (mashō ka) is a formal volitional which means what? |
Naomi: In the case of 帰りましょうか (kaerimashō ka) means shall we go home, let’s go home but 帰りましょうか (kaerimashō ka) sounds a little more formal than 帰りましょう (kaerimashō). |
Eric: And how do you say let’s listen? |
Naomi: 聞きましょう (kikimashō) |
Eric: Let’s study. |
Naomi: 勉強しましょう (benkyō shimashō) |
Eric: Let’s study grammar. |
Naomi: 文法を勉強しましょう (bunpō o benkyō shimasho) |
Eric: And on that note, let’s go to the grammar. |
Naomi: 次は、文法です。(Tsugi wa, bunpō desu.) |
Lesson focus
|
Eric: So in this lesson, we are going to go over couple of goodbye phrases that popped up in today’s dialogue and we are also going to go over another meaning for a word we learned in the last lesson, よく (yoku). So first let’s talk about よく (yoku). If you remember in last lesson we discussed adverb よく (yoku) which means often as in |
Naomi: 私は、よくテレビを見ます。(Watashi wa, yoku terebi o mimasu.) |
Eric: I often watch TV but in this episode’s dialogue, it was used in a bit of a different context. |
Naomi: Right. In the dialogue, Lori said... よくわかりました。(Yoku wakarimashita.) |
Eric: All right. She said this to indicate that she understood very well what Ryu had just said. In this case, よく (yoku) means good, well, nicely or properly you know but that doesn’t make sense by itself. Let’s do some more sample sentences. |
Naomi: よく食べました。(Yoku tabemashita.) |
Eric: Literally よく (yoku) means well and 食べました (tabemashita) means ate. I ate well. Of course it means I ate a lot but using よく (yoku) by your own actions implies that you are satisfied with what you did. So よく食べました (yoku tabemashita) would imply that you ate a lot and you are satisfied. You know you are full. You are at a good point but if you use it about someone else, you are probably impressed with their action. So if you say よく食べました (yoku tabemashita) to your friend, you might be impressed that they ate so much or more than you expected. |
Naomi: そうかもね。(Sō kamo ne.) |
Eric: Right? よく食べましたね。(Yoku tabemashita ne.) This is one of those nuanced words in Japanese. So practicing よく (yoku) in both ways. All right, next let’s talk about goodbye phrases. What’s the first word? |
Naomi: さようなら (sayōnara) |
Eric: さようなら (sayōnara) is polite and it can be used for most occasions and next is a phrase. |
Naomi: お世話になりました (o-sewa ni narimashita) |
Eric: And this phrase has a variety of meanings depending on the situation. |
Naomi: It probably means you took care of me a lot and I am grateful. |
Eric: Yeah but it roughly translates to thanks for everything and it implies that the listener has done something for or has helped the speaker in some way. The phrase is often paired with the adverb, 大変 (taihen). |
Naomi: 大変お世話になりました。(Taihen o-sewa ni narimashita.) |
Eric: And 大変 (taihen) means extremely or greatly. So I am extremely grateful for what you did for me but you could also say 本当に (hontō ni). |
Naomi: 本当にお世話になりました。(Hontō ni o-sewa ni narimashita.) |
Eric: I really appreciate it. It’s also worth noting that お世話になりました (o-sewa ni narimashtia) is past tense and that’s why people use this when they are parting, right? What’s the present tense form of this? |
Naomi: お世話になります (o-sewa ni narimasu) |
Eric: This is also a common phrase. |
Naomi: そうですね。(Sō desu ne.) But お世話になります (o-sewa ni narimasu) should be used before someone takes care of you. |
Eric: For example, |
Naomi: When you meet your host family for the first time, maybe you should say お世話になります (o-sewa ni narimasu). |
Eric: And then after that, would you say よろしくお願いします (yoroshiku onegai shimasu)? |
Naomi: Oh yeah. よろしくお願いします。お世話になります。(Yoroshiku onegai shimasu. O-sewa ni narimasu.) |
Eric: And at the end of your home stay, you would say |
Naomi: お世話になりました。(O-sewa ni narimashita.) |
Eric: さようなら。(Sayōnara.) |
Naomi: そうですね。(Sō desu ne.) |
Outro
|
Eric: And on that one, everybody. さようなら。(Sayōnara.) |
Naomi: さようなら。(Sayōnara.) |
