LORI : Hey, why don’t we all go together? |
POST CONVERSATION BANTER |
Naomi: It sounds like Shizuka is out of it. |
Eric: Yeah. And you know what I think I could take a stab as to why that is, all right. If you remember from the last time, Shizuka got a phone call from her friend’s boyfriend. |
Naomi: そうですね。リュウさんですね。(Sō desu ne. Ryū-san desu ne.) |
Eric: So she is probably thinking, should I tell Lori or should I say nothing and go to karaoke with Ryu? More dilemma, right Naomi-sensei? |
Naomi: はい。(Hai.) |
Eric: Has this happened to you before? |
Naomi: It doesn’t happen to me but I think it often happens. Don’t you think? |
Eric: Uhh drawing from a real life situation hah! Naomi-sensei in your script writing. |
Naomi: はい。(Hai.) |
Eric: So what do you think she is going to do? |
Naomi: どうだろうね。(Dō darō ne.) If I were Shizuka, I would tell Lori nothing. |
Eric: Wow Naomi-sensei, why? |
Naomi: え~、だって…。(Ē, datte...) I don’t want to hurt my friend’s feeling. |
Eric: Do you think it will hurt her or help her? |
Naomi: あ~、そうね。(Ā, sō ne.) Good question. |
Eric: Uhh all right. Well, let’s think about that while we do our vocabulary. |
Naomi: 次は単語です。(Tsugi wa tango desu.) |

VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE |
Eric: Naomi-sensei, that last word we just looked at was sports or sport, which one? |
Naomi: Both. |
Eric: But in Japanese, it is スポーツ (supōtsu). It sounds like plural. It sounds like sports. |
Naomi: そうね。スポーツ。(Sō ne. Supōtsu.) |
Eric: So sports can mean one sport or ten sports? |
Naomi: Right again there is no difference between plural and singular in Japanese. |
Eric: You know, you are here talking about words that came from English, but isn’t there a natural Japanese word that means sports? |
Naomi: あ~、運動かな?(Ā, undō ka na?) |
Eric: Ah 運動 (undō), but doesn’t that mean exercise just like the general act of you know exercising? |
Naomi: 運動 (undō) means exercise but it also means sport but 運動 (undō) sounds more serious than sport. I mean スポーツ (supōtsu). |
Eric: So how would you say to play a sport? |
Naomi: スポーツをします。(Supōtsu o shimasu.) スポーツします (supōtsu shimasu) or of course, 運動をします (undō o shimasu) or 運動します (undō shimasu). |
Eric: All right, exactly. You would say スポーツをします (supōtsu o shimasu), right? Literally to do sport. So let’s introduce some sports. To play tennis. |
Naomi: テニスをします。(Tenisu o shimasu.) |
Eric: How about to play golf? |
Naomi: ゴルフをします。(Gorufu o shimasu.) |

Eric: Yeah, so that was karate, judo, wrestling. You know basically any sport you do plus します (shimasu). Will be playing that sport, right? |
Naomi: そうですね。(Sō desu ne.) |
Eric: On to the grammar. |
Naomi: 次は文法です。(Tsugi wa bunpō desu.) |
Lesson focus
|
Eric: Okay, let’s talk about what we like. What do you like, Naomi-sensei? |
Naomi: うーん...。チョコレート。(Ūn... Chokorēto.) |
Eric: Right you said that at the beginning but what do we have in dialogue though? |
Naomi: スノボが好きです。(Sunobo ga suki desu.) |
Eric: I like snowboarding. This sentence should really be |
Naomi: 私はスノボが好きです。(Watashi wa sunobo ga suki desu.) |
Eric: You know but it’s so obvious that you are talking about what you like. So the 私は (watashi wa) is dropped. Say it one more time. |
Naomi: スノボが好きです。(Sunobo ga suki desu.) |
Eric: And by using something が好きです (ga suki desu) you can express what you like. So if you like skateboarding, |
Naomi: スケートボードが好きです。(Sukētobōdo ga suki desu.) |
Eric: If you like movies, |
Naomi: 映画が好きです。(Eiga ga suki desu.) |
Eric: If you like music, |
Naomi: Music in Japanese is 音楽 (ongaku), so... 音楽が好きです。(Ongaku ga suki desu.) |
Eric: What if you like traveling? |
Naomi: Traveling in Japanese is 旅行 (ryokō), so... |
Eric: 旅行が好きです。(Ryokō ga suki desu.) |
Naomi: そうです。(Sō desu.) |
Eric: All right. Time to practice. I am going to say an English word and Naomi-sensei is going to give you the corresponding Japanese word and what you have to do is say that you like it before we give you the answer. Tennis. |
Naomi: テニス (tenisu) |
テニスが好きです。(Tenisu ga suki desu.) |
Eric: Football. |
Naomi: フットボール (futtobōru) |
フットボールが好きです。(Futtobōru ga suki desu.) |
Eric: Japanese animation. |
Naomi: アニメ (anime) |
アニメが好きです。(Anime ga suki desu.) |
Eric: Japan. |
Naomi: 日本 (Nihon) |
日本が好きです。(Nihon ga suki desu.) |
Eric: Japanese food. |
Naomi: 日本食 (Nihonshoku) |
日本食が好きです。(Nihonshoku ga suki desu.) |
Or Japanese food could be 和食 (washoku), so... 和食が好きです (washoku ga suki desu) is also fine. |
Eric: You. |
Naomi: あなた (anata) |
あなたが好きです。(Anata ga suki desu.) |
Eric: Ah Naomi-sensei, and you blush. |
