We will be practicing the adjective Te conjunctions again and we are also going to look at honorific prefixes like O and Go and so on. Okay so Naomi Sensei, tell us about today’s conversation. | Rebecca: 警察官。(Keisatsukan.) 警察 (Keisatsu) is police and 官 (kan) is officer. |
| Naomi: そうですね。 (Sō desu ne.) Some people drop the middle 察 (sa~tsu), call police officer as 警官 (keikan). |
| Rebecca: Alright. I have also heard people say おまわりさん (omawari-san). |
| Naomi: Mr or Miss パトロールパーソン (patorōrupāson) |
| Rebecca: Yes I see. まわる (Mawaru) is to patrol around or おまわりさん (omawari-san). |
| Naomi: So, so, so it’s a friendly way to call police officers. |
| Rebecca: Right and the O is that’s an honorific prefix which we will be learning later in today’s lesson. |
| Naomi: そうです。 (Sō desu.) Well that’s handy isn’t it? |
| Rebecca: Yeah so おまわりさん (omawari-san) is what you use for the beat cop right the police officer who is in your local area. |
| Naomi: そうですね。 (Sō desu ne.) Usually we call the police officer in uniform. |
| Rebecca: So okay so like a plain close person, you wouldn’t call おまわりさん (omawari-san). |
| Naomi: 言わないですね。 (Iwanai desu ne.) |
| Rebecca: Because they don’t patrol, they just catch drug lords and things. |
| Naomi: I think Japanese police officers are really good at giving directions. |
| Rebecca: Yeah if you get lost you go to a police box on the corner of many big intersections, there is a little police box and you can go there and ask the policeman for directions. |
| Naomi: Yeah. They are the experts. Police box is called 交番 (kōban). |
| Rebecca: 交番 (Kōban), that’s probably what you see more of in Japan than actual police stations. |
| Naomi: 警察 (Keisatsu) is like police station but 交番 (kōban) is police box. |
| Rebecca: Well now let’s have a look at some of the vocab from today’s dialogue. |

| Rebecca: Well now we are going to have a look at a useful phrase from today’s dialogue which I hope our listeners never need but they maybe will. Can you say it first please Naomi Sensei. |
| Naomi: 財布を落としました。 (Saifu o otoshimashita.) |
| Rebecca: I lost my wallet. Actually literally this means I dropped my wallet and if we break up the items in this sentence and if we break this sentence down into its component parts, we have. |
| Naomi: 財布 (saifu) |
| Rebecca: Wallet or a purse |
| Naomi: を (o) |
| Rebecca: The object marker. |
| Naomi: 落としました (otoshimashita) |
| Rebecca: The past tense of the verb 落とします (otoshimasu) which means to drop. |
| Naomi: Instead of 落としました (otoshimashita) you can probably put 忘れました (wasuremashita) |
| Rebecca: Meaning to forget or to leave behind. |
| Naomi: そうですね。 (Sō desu ne.) Or なくしました (nakushimashita). |
| Rebecca: Lost. So you could say 財布を忘れました (saifu o wasuremashita). |
| Naomi: I forgot my wallet. |
| Rebecca: Yeah, kind of sounds in English. I don’t know how it sounds in Japanese but would the おまわりさん (omawari-san) think you were saying I forgot my wallet. I left it here. Is that what it kind of sounds like 差財布を忘れました (sa saifu o wasuremashita) |
| Naomi: 電車 (densha) |
| Rebecca: In the train. He would say 電車で財布を忘れました (densha de saifu o wasuremashita). |
| Naomi: 忘れました (wasuremashita) |
| Rebecca: Okay but you can just use the phrase from today’s’ dialogue. Can’t you 財布を落としました (saifu o otoshimashita). |
| Naomi: そうですね。財布を落としました (Sō desu ne. Saifu o otoshimashita) |
| Rebecca: Or you could use |
| Naomi: 財布をなくしました (saifu o nakushimashita) |
| Rebecca: I lost my wallet. |
| Naomi: なくした (Nakushita) is used most often I think. |
| Rebecca: Yeah let’s hope the listeners never need to use this but it’s probably best to memorize it just in case. Fabrizio lost his big white wallet. |
| Naomi: そうです。(Sō desu.) 白くて大きい財布を落としました (Shirokute ōkii saifu o otoshimashita) but when he is talking to himself, he said 私の新しくてゴージャスな財布 (watashi no atarashikute gōjasuna saifu). |
| Rebecca: My new gorgeous wallet. So there we can see the Te conjunction being used て (te) can’t we with the adjectives. 白い (Shiroi) becomes 白くて (shirokute). So 白くて大きい (shirokute ōkii) and what’s the other one. |
| Naomi: 新しくてゴージャスな財布 (atarashikute gōjasuna saifu) |
| Rebecca: Right so 新しい (atarashii) becomes 新しくて (atarashikute) dropping the I and adding くて (kute). |
| Naomi: ゴージャスな財布ってどんな財布でしょうね。 (Gōjasuna saifu tte don'na saifu deshō ne.) |
| Rebecca: Well he likes kind of 派手 (hade). He likes Ferrari’s and things. So maybe he 財布 (saifu) what am I doing, I am talking a mixture of Japanese and English. His wallet is maybe very flashy. |
| Naomi: なるほどね。 (Naruhodo ne.) |
| Rebecca: Maybe it’s a designer wallet. |
| Naomi: そうかもね (Sō kamo ne) or made of gold. |
| Rebecca: Made of gold. Maybe with gold tremors sparkling bits or something on it. |
| Naomi: そうかもしれないですね。 (Sō kamo shirenai desu ne.) |
| VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE |
| Rebecca: Now we are going to look at some of the grammar you might encounter if the police officer takes your details down so he or she can return your lost wallet. We are going to look at honorifics right? |

| Rebecca: So Naomi Sensei, would you read the sentence for us? |
| Naomi: こちらにお名前とお電話番号とご住所をお願いします。 (Kochira ni o-namae to o-tenwa bangō to gojūsho o onegaishimasu.) |
| Rebecca: Please write your name, your phone number and your address here. So what is your name? |
| Naomi: お名前 (o-namae) |
| Rebecca: And your phone number? |
| Naomi: お電話番号 (o-tenwa bangō) |
| Rebecca: And your address? |
| Naomi: ご住所 (gojūsho) I don’t think you can find a word お名前 (o-namae) in your dictionary. |
| Rebecca: You would have to look it up as 名前 (namae). |
| Naomi: O and Go are honorific prefixes. なので (Nanode), when you look up the dictionary, you have to take of O or Go in front of those nouns. |
| Rebecca: Okay so let’s have a look at the sentence again. |
| Naomi:こちらにお名前とお電話番号とご住所をお願いします。 (Kochira ni o-namae to o-tenwa bangō to gojūsho o onegaishimasu.) |
| Rebecca: And if we look at the components elements of this sentence, we have |

| Rebecca: No, there is more information on these honorific prefixes in the PDFs. So get hold of that and check it out and you will learn to use the difference between O and Go. Actually O and Go is kind of tricky but if you hear the vocabulary items with their usual prefixes, then that’s probably the best way to do it. What do you say Naomi-sensei? |
| Naomi: そうですね。 (Sō desu ne.) How did you memorize those O and Go thing? |
| Rebecca: Well somebody told me a general rule which these are always kind of dangerous general rules because they usually find these exceptions but…If it’s Japanese word Go, if it is a Chinese compound which might be a little tricky at this stage. |
| Naomi:そうですね。(Sō desu ne.) There is so many exceptions. |
| Rebecca: What I really recommend is just learning the words as you come across them. So in today’s lesson, we learnt the word name and phone number and address. So if you learn that with name, you say O so it’s お名前 (o-namae) and with telephone number, it’s also O so お電話番号 (o-tenwa bangō) and with address, it’s Go. So ご住所 (gojūsho). I mean if you do it little by little, I am sure it’s easy to sort of you build up a reserve of these words and yeah it will be – over time it will become a lot easier. |
| Naomi: そうですよね。 (Sō desu yo ne.) And the very important point is you can’t use O for your own information. For example, 私のお名前は、なおみです (watashi no o-namae wa, Naomi desu.) |

| Naomi: 気を付けてください。 (Ki o tsukete kudasai.) |
