INTRODUCTION |
Jessi: How Much Did You Say That Costs in Japanese?! |
Naomi: ナオミです。(Naomi desu.) |
Akihiro: アキヒロです。(Akihiro desu.) |
Peter: Peter here. Naomi-sensei, |
Naomi: はい。(Hai.) |
Peter: How are you feeling today? |
Naomi: ちょっと風邪です。(Chotto kaze desu.) |
Peter: You have a bit of a cold. |
Naomi: はい。(Hai.) |
Peter: Well actually I do, too. |
Naomi: はい。気を付けてくださいね、アキヒロさん。(Hai. Ki o tsukete kudasai ne, Akihiro-san.) |
Peter: Yeah, Akihiro-san, please watch out. |
Akihiro: 頑張ります。(Ganbarimasu.) |
Peter: I will try not to get a cold? |
Akihiro: はい。風邪をひかないように頑張ります。(Hai. Kaze o hikanai yō ni ganbarimasu.) |
Peter: 頑張ってください。 (Ganbatte kudasai.) So try your best and Naomi-sensei, |
Naomi: はい。(Hai.) |
Peter: We should also 頑張ります (ganbarimasu) to make him sick. |
Naomi: そうですね、はい。ええー?(Sō desu ne, hai. Eē?) |
Akihiro: 勘弁してくださいよ。(Kanben shite kudasai yo.) |
Peter: Okay, 勘弁してください (kanben shite kudasai). |
Akihiro: I think that’s give me a break. |
Peter: Yeah, that’s quite a nice phrase and probably really useful for our Nihongo Dojo. Okay Naomi-sensei, help us out here. What are we talking about today? |
Naomi: We are going to talk about 傘 (kasa). |
Peter: Umbrella. |
Naomi: はい。(Hai.) |
Peter: And this umbrella is a bit on the high end. |
Naomi: Yeah. Very expensive. For me yeah. At least for me. |
Peter: I think for everybody in this room. Well, アキヒロさん、どうですか。(Akihiro-san, dō desu ka.) How about for you? |
Akihiro: いや、高すぎですよ、これは。(Iya, takasugi desu yo, kore wa.) |
Peter: Yeah, it’s a little too expensive this is. |
Naomi: Yeah, Fabrizio-san is at an expensive shop. You can tell from the way the shopping clerk speaks. |
Peter: Yeah, so we are going to take a look at that when we break apart the conversation. We are also going to go over big numbers and tens of thousands. So we have a lot to go over. |
Naomi: はい。(Hai.) |
Peter: Which means we should start as soon as possible. So here we go. |

SHOPPING CLERK: Thank you very much. With tax, that will be 29,400 yen. |
POST CONVERSATION BANTER |
Peter: So Naomi-sensei, what did you think of today’s conversation? |
Naomi: If you take a look at the PDF, you will see the kanji for 傘 (kasa). I like that kanji. |
Peter: What do you like about it? |
Naomi: Because it looks like an umbrella. Don’t you think? You don’t agree. |
Peter: Umm. アキヒロさん、どうですか。(Akihiro-san, dō desu ka.) What do you think? |
Akihiro: Yeah I do agree. Yeah, it does look like an umbrella and I see four people under one umbrella in that kanji. |
Peter: Ah..Now I see what you are talking about. If you are listening to this, definitely like Naomi-sensei said, go back, check out the PDF and then fast forward to this part or rewind to this part because yeah it does have the kanji for person four times. |
Akihiro: Yeah, that’s why I said four people. |
Peter: Now I see it. Well is that what you are talking about Naomi-sensei or did you visit, like – envisioned something different like a fancy umbrella with no people under it. |
Akihiro: No people under it? |
Peter: You know like a designer umbrella with little things hanging off it. |
Naomi: I saw four people under the umbrella. |
Akihiro: So then same with me, right? |
Naomi: Yeah. |
Peter: Okay, and I will just have to take your word for it. And anybody else out there, leave us a comment. Does it look like an umbrella? Well we will find out. What we are going to do now is we are going to give you the word one time and how we are going to do this is, we are going to give you the word. Then we are going to give you the English, then we are going to give it to you slowly and then we are going to give you the word again. Now Naomi-sensei and Akihiro-san are going to do their best to emphasize the pitch accent in each word. So see if you can pick it up. Okay. ナオミ先生、お願いします。(Naomi-sensei, onegai shimasu.) |
VOCAB LIST |
Naomi: 店員 (ten’in) |
Peter: Shop assistant, employee, clerk. |
Naomi: (slow) てんいん (ten’in) (natural speed) 店員 (ten’in) |
Peter: So this is high to low? |
Naomi: Low to high. (slow) てんいん (ten’in) (natural speed) 店員 (ten’in) |
Peter: So you start out low with the て (te)… |
Naomi: Yeah. |
Peter: And then rise on the ん (n) and stay high. |
Naomi: Exactly. |
Peter: One more time. |
Naomi: (slow) てんいん (ten’in) (natural speed) 店員 (ten’in) |
Peter: Next we have |
Akihiro: いらっしゃいませ (irasshaimase) |
Peter: A phrase welcome or may I help you. |
Akihiro: (slow) いらっしゃいませ (irasshaimase) (natural speed) いらっしゃいませ (irasshaimase) |
VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE |
Peter: Low to high and at the end, we come back down. Okay, so Naomi-sensei, can you just focus on that one? |
Naomi: はい。(Hai.) (slow) いらっしゃいませ (irasshaimase) |
Peter: So it peaks on the ま (ma). |
Naomi: はい、そうです。(Hai, sō desu.) And then low at the せ (se). |
Peter: Akihiro-san, one more time. |
Akihiro: いらっしゃいませ (irasshaimase) |
Peter: Ah I could hear peak at the ま (ma) and then come back down, tail off at the end. いらっしゃいませ (irasshaimase) |
Naomi: そうです。(Sō desu.) |
Peter: Ah so everybody who wants a part time job out there, this is the phrase to practice. Then we have, next another phrase. |
Naomi: ありがとうございます (arigatō gozaimasu) |
Peter: Polite way to say thank you. |
Naomi: (slow) ありがとうございます (arigatō gozaimasu) (natural speed) ありがとうございます (arigatō gozaimasu) |
Peter: Now ありがとう (arigatō) is thank you. Here the ございます (gozaimasu) is increasing the politeness level. |
Naomi: そうです。(Sō desu.) |
Peter: And since they are in such a nice store, that’s kind of 当たり前 (atarimae), which means a presupposition. So taking for granted that this is the way you’d be treated in such a high class store. Then we have |
Akihiro: 傘 (kasa) |
Peter: Umbrella. |
Akihiro: (slow) かさ (kasa) (natural speed) 傘 (kasa) |
Peter: Here high to low. |
Naomi: はい、そうです。(Hai, sō desu.) |
Peter: And yeah if you really especially when you hear it slowly, if you really try and really, really pay attention to how it’s being said, I think you could start to really pick up on this pitch accent. |
Naomi: そうですね。(Sō desu ne.) (slow) かさ (kasa) (natural speed) 傘 (kasa) |
Peter: 傘 (kasa) |
Naomi: そうです。(Sō desu.) |
Peter: Next we have |
Naomi: 税込み (zeikomi) |
Peter: Tax included. |
Naomi: (slow) ぜいこみ (zeikomi) (natural speed) 税込み (zeikomi) |
Peter: Low to high. |
Naomi: はい。(Hai.) |
Peter: Low and stays high. |
Naomi: そうです。(Sō desu.) |
Peter: This is followed by |
Akihiro: をください (o kudasai) |
Peter: Please. Please give me and whatever comes before the object marker を (o). |
Akihiro: (slow) をください (o kudasai) (natural speed) をください (o kudasai) |
Peter: Hmm you know, I have a bit more difficulty picking up the pitch accent from a male speaker. So Akihiro-san, kind of blew it up by me. |
Naomi: そうですね。(Sō desu ne.) I am not sure but I think Japanese guys tend to speak flat. |
Peter: Yeah they have a much shorter – maybe you can see I think they speak flat. No range. |
Naomi: うーん。そうですね。(Ūn, sō desu ne.) |
Peter: So it’s a bit harder to pick up the pitch accent because they have none. Now not that extreme but it’s a much shorter range. So you have to kind of tune your ear even more to really pick it up. Can you give us ください (kudasai), Naomi-sensei? |
Naomi: (slow) ください (kudasai) (natural speed) ください (kudasai) |
Peter: So it starts out low, rises in the middle and back down at the end. |
Naomi: そうです。(Sō desu.) |
Peter: Yeah. When you say it, I think you have a special way of saying. It’s quite well it’s much more easy to pick up than Akihiro-san. |
Akihiro: すいません。ください、ください...。(Suimasen. Kudasai, kudasai...) I have to practice, yeah. |
Peter: Next we have |
Naomi: 円 (en) |
Peter: Japanese yen. |
Naomi: (slow) えん (en) (natural speed) 円 (en) |
Peter: Okay, so let’s take a look at this conversation and we are going to stop at the grammar points and go into them in a bit of detail. |
Lesson focus
|
Peter: Okay, so the conversation starts out with the clerk. |
Naomi: いらっしゃいませ。(Irasshaimase.) |
Peter: Welcome, followed by |
Akihiro: すみません。あの傘はいくらですか。(Sumimasen. Ano kasa wa ikura desu ka.) |
Peter: Excuse me, how much is that umbrella? So first we have the phrase excuse me. This is followed by, let’s look at the first component. Here we have |
Akihiro: あの (ano) |
Peter: This is a demonstrative adjective. This is modifying the noun that follows it. Now what follows it? |
Akihiro: 傘 (kasa) |
Peter: That umbrella. When a demonstrative adjective precedes a noun, it’s talking about location of the umbrella and in this case, あの (ano) means over there that umbrella over there. When we are talking about a noun, this, that or that over there, we use Naomi-sensei? |
Naomi: これ (kore) |
Peter: This. |
Naomi: それ (sore) |
Peter: That. |
Naomi: あれ (are) |
Peter: That over there. In the previous lesson, we went over this but just to review, if we wanted to ask about the price of that over there, how do we do it? |
Naomi: あれはいくらですか。(Are wa ikura desu ka.) |
Peter: How much is that over there but here we have a noun. We have an umbrella. We are stating the umbrella and the location of the umbrella is over there. Well logic would say that this store is an umbrella shop. So there are a lot of different umbrellas. So in order to specify which umbrella the speaker is talking about, the speaker refers to the one over there and because we are referring to that one over there, the location is modifying the noun. So we use the adjective あの (ano). |
Naomi: あの傘はいくらですか。(Ano kasa wa ikura desu ka.) |
Peter: So we have that umbrella. This is marked by |
Akihiro: は (wa) |
Peter: The topic marking particle, followed by |
Akihiro: いくら (Ikura) |
Peter: How much and lastly |
Akihiro: ですか (desu ka) |
Peter: Is, followed by the question marking particle. So literally, that umbrella how much is. How much is that umbrella? Now Naomi-sensei, if we are talking about this umbrella, how could we ask how much is this umbrella? |
Naomi: この傘はいくらですか。(Kono kasa wa ikura desu ka.) |
Peter: The same exact sentence. The only thing that changes is |
Naomi: こ (ko) |
Peter: Well yeah, I didn’t even think of that. The only thing that changed in the sentence is just one syllable. |
Naomi: One sound. |
Peter: Yeah one sound. The あ (a) becomes こ (ko). |
Naomi: はい。(Hai.) |
Peter: The demonstrative adjective for over there is あの (ano) and the demonstrative adjective for something close by is この (kono). |
Naomi: はい。(Hai.) |
Peter: Very interesting. Actually the whole word will change though. あの (ano) becomes この (kono) but yeah for the change, only one thing changes. Now how about Akihiro-san, if we want to know the price of the umbrella not too far away but out of reach? |
Akihiro: その傘はいくらですか。(Sono kasa wa ikura desu ka.) |
Peter: Let’s try something else. Let’s try a different object. How do we say book in Japanese? |
Naomi: 本 (hon) |
Peter: So if you go to a bookstore and you want to know the price of a book that you are holding? |
Naomi: この本はいくらですか。(Kono hon wa ikura desu ka.) |
Peter: This book how much is. So we have the demonstrative adjective この (kono), followed by |
Naomi: 本 (hon) |
Peter: So this book and of course this works with any noun. This person. |
Naomi: この人 (kono hito) |
Peter: And so on and so on. So you can have any combination of a demonstrative adjective which is the position of the noun you are talking about and followed by a noun. So in the PDF, there is a much more detailed explanation of what’s going on here. Okay, let’s jump back to this conversation. Next we have |
Naomi: 33,000円でございます。(San-man san-zen-en de gozaimasu.) |
Peter: It’s ¥33000. Let’s take a look at literally what’s going on here. First we have |
Naomi: 33,000 (san-man san-zen) |
Peter: 33000. This is followed by |
Naomi: 円 (en) |
Peter: Japanese yen. So ¥33000, followed by |
Naomi: でございます (de gozaimasu) |
Peter: Which is an extremely polite version of the copula which is kind of the equivalent of the English verb to be. So is. That’s all we are saying here is. |
Naomi: そうですね。(Sō desu ne.) The shopping clerk could have said 33,000円です (san-man san-zen-en desu). |
Peter: But as it’s such a high end store. |
Naomi: 33,000円でございます。(San-man san-zen-en de gozaimasu.) |
Peter: So if you are in Japan and you hear this, でございます (de gozaimasu), translate it as です (desu) and it will make perfect sense to you. Now again this is we are talking about politeness level here and when this is used, the politeness level is increased. That’s the effect of this でございます (de gozaimasu). Okay, now what should we do about these numbers, Naomi-sensei? We are kind of running out of time here. |
Naomi: Yeah, we are going to cover the numbers in a different lesson. |
Peter: What about an appendix? |
Naomi: Yeah, appendix. |
Peter: Okay, so stop by japanesepod101.com and pick up the bonus appendix where we are going to go over the numbers and how to count. In addition, we also want to try something else. In the past, we tried and we had pretty good feedback with giving you a bonus track in which you can practice your Japanese. So we will give you the word, then we leave some time for you to say it out loud. Then we give it to you slowly, some time for you to say it and then we give it to you one more time and time for you to say it also with phrases in there. So we are going to try this, too. So today there are going to be two bonus tracks. Anyone who subscribed to the premium feed in iTunes can download everything there. So just go to iTunes and get all three audio clips from today’s lesson. Okay, so umm I think there is only one more point we would really need to cover in here and that’s the last line. |
Naomi: 税込み29,400円でございます。(Zeikomi ni-man kyū-sen yon-hyaku-en de gozaimasu.) |
Peter: And 税込み (zeikomi) is |
Naomi: Tax included. |
Peter: Yes, so the price was ¥28000 but after tax which are you sure to write for this calculation? |
Naomi: Yeah, I am positive. |
Peter: Positive. So a lot of tax. |
Naomi: 5%です。(Go-pāsento desu.) |
Peter: 5% tax in Japan. |
(Note: The consumption tax in Japan was 5% in 2007 when this lesson was recorded.) |
Naomi: はい。(Hai.) |
Peter: Sales tax. So it starts out with tax included, ¥29400. |
Outro
|
Peter: All right. So that is going to do for today. |
Naomi: じゃあ、また。(Jā, mata.) |
Akihiro: じゃあ、また。(Jā, mata.) |
